clomid-defects-ultrasoundClomid, the fertility drug, has been blamed in numerous cases involving birth defects in infants.

It has been suggested that the biggest danger comes from use of the drug outside of medical supervision. Clomid (clomiphene) is a drug that can be prescribed to stimulate egg ovulation.

The trick is to use the drug at such a time that it is effective in encouraging conception but the drug has left the woman’s body before it affects the fetus.

While some women are prescribed the fertility drug through their doctors, many women choose to purchase the drug online and are not aware of the risk of developing Clomid birth defects or the importance of timing during use.

Some researchers found that women who use Clomid without medical supervision have a 300 percent increased chance of giving birth to a child with birth defects.

About Clomid Birth Defects

Multiple birth defects have been found in children whose mothers use Clomid. Most of these birth defects are skull or heart defects. A study performed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that that Clomid birth defects may include:

  • Anencephaly (baby born without parts of brain and skull)
  • Coarctation of the aorta (narrowing of the aorta)
  • Craniosyntosis (premature fusion of an infant’s skull sutures)
  • Esophageal atresia (baby born without part of the esophagus)
  • Omphalocele (baby’s abdominal organs are outside of the body)
  • Septal heart defect (hole in the wall of the heart)

The CDC pointed out that the number of women who took Clomid as their fertility drug was not large enough to make a concrete finding as some birth defects may have been caused by underlying conditions.

Clomid was put into Category X by the FDA. Category X means that the fertility drug carries a danger to a fetus. While there are medications that carry some risk of birth defect or other complications, the drugs that are given Category X should be taken with great care and with medical supervision.

Clomid Lawsuits

A Clomid birth defect class action lawsuit investigation is underway for women who wish to take legal action against the drug manufacturer. Clomid lawsuits may be able to help a family receive compensation for the damages caused by the drug.

Clomid birth defects can cause a child to require additional medical treatment, special education, and/or reduce their potential future earnings. Clomid lawsuits can help a family better support their newborn who was born with a birth defect that was not adequately warned against by the drug manufacturer.

In general, Clomid lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
