diabetes and Lipitor linkPfizer Inc. has been hit by yet another Lipitor lawsuit, just one of thousands of lawsuits filed against the pharmaceutical giant, alleging their popular cholesterol drug Lipitor caused countless women to develop type-2 diabetes.

Plaintiff Barbara G., a resident of Florida, filed this Lipitor diabetes lawsuit against Pfizer at the beginning of April. She claims that she was prescribed Lipitor in June 2002 by her doctor, and she continued to take the cholesterol drug until December 2011, a few months after she was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes.

Barbara, now 68 years old, has filed this Lipitor lawsuit, alleging her type-2 diabetes was caused by the Pfizer medication, a Lipitor side effect that Pfizer failed to warn her and other consumers about.

According to the Lipitor type-2 diabetes lawsuit, “As a direct, proximate and foreseeable result of Defendants actions or inactions, [Barbara] suffered grievous bodily injury and consequently economic and other losses, including but not limited to pain and suffering, emotional distress and loss of enjoyment of life.”

This Lipitor lawsuit brings several allegations against Pfizer, including: negligence, negligent misrepresentation, negligent design, design defect, failure to warn, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, fraud and misrepresentation, constructive fraud, unjust enrichment, and punitive damages.

Barbara is seeking compensation for the pain and suffering she has experienced dueto her alleged Lipitor type-2 diabetes condition.

The Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit is Case No. 2:15-cv-01500-RMG, in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina.

It is part of the nationwide Lipitor Multidistrict Litigation, In re: Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2502, in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, Charleston Division.

Lipitor Type-2 Diabetes Side Effects

Many patients besides Barbara have filed Lipitor lawsuits alleging they developed type-2 diabetes after using the cholesterol medication. In fact, there are over 2,000 Lipitor lawsuits pending in federal and state courts against Pfizer Inc., with the majority of the plaintiffs being women. Of the reported Lipitor type-2 diabetes cases, the plaintiffs claim that they developed diabetes anywhere from a few months or a few years after they began taking Lipitor.

In light of the these numerous adverse drug event reports and published Lipitor type-2 diabetes studies, the FDA issued an August 2011 health notice, which required Pfizer Inc. to put a type-2 diabetes risk warning on their Lipitor marketing and labeling. The following year, the FDA also established a general mandate to all statin drug manufacturers to include a type-2 diabetes warning on their statin drug products.

In February 2012, Lipitor finally followed up on the FDA labeling mandate and updated Lipitor’s drug and product labels to feature a type-2 diabetes warning.

While this action by Lipitor benefits current and future Lipitor consumers, it does not fix the Lipitor side effects many women reportedly suffered prior to the 2012 Lipitor labeling change. As a result, many women have filed Lipitor diabetes lawsuits, seeking justice for their personal injuries allegedly caused by Pfizer’s statin drug.
