Zithromax/Zmax and Z-Pak are one of many drugs under investigation for severe complications. Patients have developed Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) shortly after Zithromax use. Zithromax lawsuits have claimed that the drug manufacturer failed to warn against Zithromax SJS and other negative side effects.
Zithromax is an antibiotic that is widely used across the nation. It is also sold as Z-Pak. It can be prescribed as a three or five day dose pack. It is approved to treat bacterial infections such as skin infections, ear infections, and STDs.Â
In spite of its popularity in the United States, many individuals have experienced severe and sometimes deadly side effects from Zithromax/Zmax or Z-Pak. In 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that the Zithromax brochure issued by Pfizer claimed that Zithromax was a superior antibiotic while minimizing information concerning Zithromax complications such as Zithromax SJS. The FDA also noted that Pfizer was suggesting that Zithromax could be used to treat infections that the FDA had not yet approved.
Stevens Johnson Syndrome
SJS is an allergic reaction to a medication, such as Zithromax/Zmax and Z-Pak. This autoimmune disease attacks the skin – a severe, painful condition that causes the skin to burn off from the inside out. It begins with flu-like symptoms before a rash, then sores and blisters develop on the skin and mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth, throat, etc). The blistering can spread all across the body depending on the case and the effectiveness of treatment.
With SJS, the top layer of skin (epidermal layer) dies and sheds off. This leaves the body open to secondary infections, sepsis, and even death. About 5-15 percent of Stevens Johnson Syndrome patients die from complications arising from SJS. Many patients are left permanently scarred or with organ damage.
If the blisters and rash cover more than 30 percent of the body, the diagnosis changes to Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). TEN is considerably more dangerous than SJS. TEN patients may lose large amounts of skin as sheets may slough off the body at once. The body is more open to sepsis and other complications. 30-40 percent of patients die from TEN side effects.Â
Zithromax Lawsuits
Many Zithromax lawsuits have been filed after cases of Zithromax SJS were discovered. Plaintiffs have alleged that the manufacturer failed to warn against severe Zithromax complications. Family members of loved ones who died from Zithromax complications may file a wrongful death lawsuit as well.Â
Zithromax is under investigation for liver and kidney side effects as well.
A Zithromax class action lawsuit investigation is currently underway.
