Judge Approves Coppertone Sunscreen Class Action Settlement
By Kimberly Mirando
A federal judge has approved the Coppertone sunscreen class action lawsuit settlement. Class Members who submitted a valid Claim Form by the deadline will likely see their cash payments in the mail within the next 30-60 days. [UPDATE: Checks have been mailed!]
U.S. District Judge Peter G. Sheridan granted final approval to the Coppertone sunscreen settlement on March 12, putting an end to allegations that Merck & Co. deceptively marketed its sunscreen products by exaggerating their benefits.
Under the settlement, consumers who purchased Coppertone sunscreen products in the United States between July 31, 2006 and October 5, 2012 will receive a cash payment if they submitted a Claim Form by the deadline of March 4, 2013. The amount of this class action settlement award will be based on how many people filed valid claims.
The settlement also requires Merck to discontinue using the terms “sunblock,” “waterproof,” “sweatproof,” “all day” and/or “all day protection” in the labeling, advertising, marketing or promotion of all Coppertone sunscreen products.
