credit card interest chargesA recently discovered Capital One breach involved the theft of millions of customer records from Capital One due to a specific security vulnerability. If your information was affected in the data breach, you may be able to join a class action lawsuit investigation and pursue compensation.

What Was the Capital One Breach?

A hacker used a security flaw in Amazon’s cloud technology to steal 106 million Capital One customer records in the U.S. and Canada. Through this, the alleged hacker, Paige Thompson, found a misconfigured setting in Capital One security that allowed her to access these records and download them without triggering an alert.

Data exposed during the breach includes consumers’ personal information, including 140,000 Social Security numbers and 80,000 bank account numbers, as well as birthdays, addresses, and more. Reportedly, consumers’ credit card numbers themselves weren’t among the swaths of information stolen in the hack.

“The largest category of information accessed was information on consumers and small businesses as of the time they applied for one of our credit card products from 2005 through early 2019,” said Capital One in a statement posted on their website.

The hacker who conducted the major breach is scheduled for a bail hearing on August 15.

Capital One says that this configuration issue has been addressed.

What Do I Do if I Was Affected by the Breach?

If you were affected by the Capital One breach, like 6 million Canadians and millions of Americans, there are a number of steps you can take.

First and foremost, keep an eye out for any communications from Capital One. You can also contact the company through the email address listed on its website, or call the bank directly. Be wary of actually replying to emails purportedly from Capital One; the company notes that some people may take advantage of the news of the breach and attempt a phishing scam on affected consumers.

You can sign up for a credit monitoring service, which can help stop a potential fraudster from opening an account under your name. (Of course, even if you were not affected by this particular breach, this might be a good step for you anyway—more data breaches are likely to happen at some point in the future, so you can be prepared in advance.)

In order to keep alert to any potential fraud in the future, you may also choose to set up alerts on your credit cards, make a routine of checking your credit card statements more than once a month, and ensure you know how to freeze your credit if necessary.

The security of my email address and personal information have always been a top priority of mine. My phone never rang, and I never had accounts being accessed by random people. Since Capital one allowed my information to become comprised my email address and account information has been found on the “dark web” and my phone rings 15 to 20 times a day now from numbers that can’t even be called back. Always some sort of scammer or complete silence or stupid recordings. I am so sick of this. I hope they are held accountable.

Saturday, November 02, 2019; Me Too; months ago I called to inform when I first heard about the breach; they still To date have not owned up to what is going on, trying to hope this will die out so they won’t have Compensate for our loss, because of all these breaches; Equifax, Capitol One, Yahoo, Medical Industries & all others 2016 to present, my credit score has been hit, I receive multiple Robo- Calls daily, my emails have been compromised, all types of emails from organizations/companies I never subscribed for (daily garbage ) then the claim forms who ever input for you to file these claims have made it very difficult for anyone to submit claims; they got it set up to irritate you, so you would just say **** **!!! which leaves more money for the attorneys to collect… then also with these breaches they expect from 2012 to present to have documentation, peoples lives go on daily, people relocate, declutter, downsize throw out things, not always write down persons names/dates/time who they inquired to about this or that, so they do not have documentation to present to no one???
Not only should be a class action for an all of the sudden annual fee, that pops up after a 0 balance on your accounts; you apply for a mortgage for a house & all the sudden capitol one wants to send notices for an annual fee, to cause you to become delinquent so your credit scores will drop, causing 2 other creditors to close your accounts; then they prior to all this have your prepaid credit frozen with a 0 balance, claiming dispute because you have multiple times from 2014, 2015, 2016 to present verified with the financial institutions on the phone, you given a direct family member to make payments on your account prior, then all sudden the claim you in the fraud department with a $300 line of credit 1/2 you applied to the card to get the card; and you haven’t used the card since 2015 to present because they put a freeze on your card blocking you from using your card. Now with this data breach they did not notify all their customers, they covered it up, trying put on Equifax so they can compensate Consumers with the same extreme very little compensation for your life long credit whom none of us has idea who has our data that can be used 300 years from now. Yes include me and start this 2nd Class Action Lawsuit with me as the lead. Mrs. Gee
