U-Haul notified customers about a 2023 data breach of a system used by the moving truck, trailer and self-storage rental company to track customer reservations and view customer records.

The company says the data breach affected around 67,000 customers in the United States and Canada, Bleeping Computer reports.

In a sample letter filed with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, U-Haul attributed the data breach to an unauthorized individual using legitimate credentials and says it exposed the birthdates, names and driver’s license numbers of those affected.

“Upon discovering this incident, U-Haul initiated their response protocol and a cybersecurity firm was engaged to conduct an investigation,” the company writes in the letter.

U-Haul data breach lasted more than 3 months, company says

U-Haul says the data breach lasted from July, 20, 2023, to Nov. 2, 2023, and discovered the incident more than two months later on Dec. 5, 2023.

The company began mailing notification letters to affected customers Feb. 22 and is offering one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services with Experian as a precaution, the letter states.

U-Haul also says it took steps to enhance its existing security measures by changing the passwords for affected accounts and implementing additional safeguards and controls.

Consumers with more questions about the U-Haul data breach can contact the company directly at (866) 963-0620.

A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against U-Haul in Sept. 2022 over claims it failed to put the proper security in place to prevent a seven-month long data breach that exposed customer information.

How I found out is was by the sheriff department investigating my case where Uhaul gave away all my personal property whiteout my knowledge when I specifically had written done in my file with Uhaul to never release my personal property to anyone but me and it’s also written in there contract they would not do n=that without my consent so they are not held liable . Uhaul gave all my property away without my knowledgeable continued to take my monthly payments for almost four months and never told me they gave my stuff away. They withheld information from the sheriff department in the investigation, and stated that I called in and asked for my property to be transported over 60 miles without my l knowledge and that iersin broke into Uhaul’s system and changed my address, phone number and all pertinent information in my file to there information . Remind you this all haloened two days after me talking to the a general manager who promised me that my property was in safe keeping with him/Uhaul and asked me over four times did I want to increase the insurance on my personal property I said do I need to he said well I am asking because ai had over 2r0,000 worth of gemstones on there because he asked me what I had in there ai told him because he made me believe he was going to help me get it shipped to another country that I was moving to out of the US. This was all a lie and breech of trust, breech of contract , concealment and he lost glues in. The person was convicted in court for a felony from Uhaul giving them my property however I would like to go after Uhaul for class action in other peoples information being breach on him hacking there system and in addition to that all the things they done to me.
