Comcast class action overview:Â
- Who: Comcast Xfinity is facing a pair of additional class action lawsuits after an October data breach.Â
- Why: Xfinity did not properly secure the data of more than 36 million customers, the lawsuits claim.
- Where: The Comcast class action lawsuits were filed in federal court in Pennsylvania.
Comcast Cable Communications is facing a pair of additional lawsuits in Pennsylvania federal court claiming it did not properly protect 36 million customers’ personal identifying information (PII) from an October data breach.
The two new lawsuits are in addition to a previously filed lawsuit from December related to the Comcast data breach.
Xfinity uses Citrix, which announced a vulnerability of one of its softwares on Oct. 10 that included a patch to fix the issue. Xfinity later discovered that the vulnerability led to a data breach of its systems between Oct. 16 and 19.
“On or around December 6, 2023, Xfinity concluded that the PII included usernames and hashed passwords; for some customers, other information was also included, such as names, contact information, last four digits of social security numbers, dates of birth and/or secret questions and answers,” the Comcast class action lawsuits claim.
Comcast should pay restitution, damages and relief, Comcast class actions claim
The Comcast data breach plaintiffs are asking for restitution and damages to be paid along with declaratory and injunctive relief and an order declaring that Comcast is responsible for the claims.
“Comcast’s failure to direct profits derived from plaintiffs’ and class members’ payments for services toward safeguarding plaintiffs’ and class members’ PII constitutes the inequitable retention of a benefit without payment for its value,” the lawsuits claim.
