Twitter data breach overview:
- Who: Israeli cybersecurity-monitoring firm co-founder Alon Gal alleges Twitter suffered a data breach affecting more than 200 million of its users.
- Why: Gal says hackers stole and now posted the email addresses of more than 200 million Twitter uses on an online hacking forum.
- Where: The alleged data breach affects Twitter users nationwide.
Hackers stole and posted the email addresses of more than 200 million Twitter users on an online hacking forum this week in a data breach, the co-founder of an Israeli cybersecurity-monitoring firm claims.
Alon Gal, co-founder of Hudson Rock, revealed the purported data breach on LinkedIn, calling it “one of the most significant leaks I’ve seen,” Reuters reported.
Gal also reportedly warns the alleged Twitter hack, which he first posted about on social media on Dec. 24, would lead to “hacking, targeted phishing and doxxing.”
Twitter has not responded to the breach allegations or any inquiries, Reuters reported.
Screenshots of the hacking forum where the alleged email addresses of Twitter users were posted earlier this week have reportedly been making the rounds online.
The alleged Twitter hack reportedly may have occurred as early as 2021, before Elon Musk acquired the company for $44 billion in October.
It is unclear at this time if the email addresses published on the hacking forum are authentic or if the company has taken any actions to investigate or address it, Reuters reported.
Twitter users concerned about hack can enter email address into data breach notification service
Twitter users who are concerned they have been affected by the alleged hack can visit data breach notification service Have I Been Pwned and search for their email address, Bleeping Computer reported.
In summer 2022, Twitter confirmed a breach caused by a vulnerability exposed the personal information of more than 5.4 million Twitter users.
In that data breach, the vulnerability on Twitter allowed anyone who entered the email address or phone number of a Twitter user to find the Twitter ID connected to that information.
Additionally, threat actors published information from a December 2021 Twitter hack, including phone numbers, email addresses, Twitter IDs and login names, on an online hacking forum in November.

Y’all who say you are affected by this or another hack can’t just expect lawyers to look you up and find you buy a comment you post on a website. Read the rules, look it up, do what you have to do if you want representation, but placing a comment isn’t gonna cut it.
I’m sorry but the ignorance or perhaps laziness astounds me. You have all the worlds information in the palm of your hand, look it up. Here’s another way of putting it: it just doesn’t work like that!
