Michigan Medicine revealed last week that it was the victim of a data breach that may have exposed the private health information of around 34,000 of its patients.

Potentially affected patients received a notification from Michigan Medicine disclosing that it suffered a data breach after a phishing scam compromised employee email accounts, MLive reports

Michigan Medicine says the data breach occurred between Aug. 15 and Aug. 23 after hackers encouraged employees to visit a website set up to collect their login credentials.

Four Michigan Medicine employees had their email accounts compromised due to the phishing scam, according to the medical center.

Michigan Medicine says it discovered the data breach on Aug. 23 and disabled the compromised email accounts to prevent the hackers from achieving further access.

Information contained within the compromised email addresses included patient names, medical record numbers, birthdates, treatment and diagnostic information and health insurance information, among other things, MLive reports.

Michigan Medicine says that in its initial investigation, it did not find evidence hackers conducted the data breach to obtain patient information. It says it wrapped up a follow-up review to determine if sensitive patient data was affected on Oct. 17.

The compromised email addresses did not contain financial information such as credit card, debit card or bank account numbers; however, one patient’s Social Security number may have been exposed, according to Michigan Medicine officials.

Advocate Aurora Health also disclosed a data breach this month that it says exposed the private health information of up to 3 million of its patients.
