Advocate Aurora data breach overview:

  • Who: Advocate Aurora Health disclosed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that it experienced a data breach.
  • Why: The data breach may have exposed the private health information of as many as 3 million of its patients.
  • Where: Advocate Aurora serves customers in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Advocate Aurora Health reported it was the victim of a data breach that may have exposed the personal health information of as many as 3 million of its Wisconsin and Illinois patients.

The health care company reported the data breach, which reportedly occurred Oct. 14, to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services last week, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports

Advocate Aurora revealed the data breach potentially exposed personal information, including IP addresses, patients’ medical providers and dates and locations of scheduled appointments.

The Advocate Aurora data breach did not expose patients’ Social Security or financial information, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

The breach could reportedly lead to potentially exposed personal health information, which is protected by the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), with companies such as Facebook and Google.

Advocate Aurora disclosed it uses online tracking technologies like Google and Facebook to collect data on certain patient website interactions, including “patient portals” on its LiveWell and MyChart applications and websites.

Company disables tracking pixels in wake of Advocate Aurora data breach

The health care company says in the disclosure notice that it deactivated the pixels used to track patients in response to the data breach.

We have disabled and/or removed the pixels from our platforms and launched an internal investigation to better understand what patient information was transmitted to our vendors,” Advocate Aurora says in the notice.

Advocate Aurora also says it has no evidence the tracking pixels caused the data breach and that it will make improvements and enhancements to its security and information systems where appropriate.

“These pixels would be very unlikely to result in identity theft or any financial harm, and we have no evidence of misuse or incidents of fraud stemming from this incident,” the company states.

Last year, an individual filed a class action lawsuit against Advocate Aurora and its hospital Advocate Christ Medical Center, arguing the hospital allowed his deceased mothers data to be hacked. The case was later dismissed.
