Experian, T-Mobile data breach settlements overview:

Experian and T-Mobile will pay 40 U.S. states a total of $16 million in settlements to end claims the companies were responsible for data breaches in 2012 and 2015 that exposed the personal information of millions of consumers.
In statements released Oct. 7, a group of state attorneys general announced that they had reached a settlement for more than $13.67 million with Experian for its role in allowing the two breaches.
T-Mobile will pay $2.5 million in connection with the 2015 breach, which affected 15 million people who filed credit applications with the company.
Under the settlements, the companies agreed to improve their data security practices.
“These data breaches will keep happening until we force change in corporate behavior,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro says. “Experian and T-Mobile failed in their responsibility to safeguard consumers’ personal information. Their systems were vulnerable to a massive data breach, and the personal identifying information for millions of Americans was put at risk.”
Experian, T-Mobile suffer major data breaches
In September 2015, Experian reported it experienced a data breach in which an unauthorized actor gained access to part of its network that stored personal information on behalf of its client, T-Mobile.
The Experian breach included names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, identification numbers, such as driver’s license and passport numbers, and related information used in T-Mobile’s own credit assessments.
A 40-state multistate group obtained separate settlements from Experian and T-Mobile in connection with the 2015 data breach. As part of a $12.67 million settlement, Experian agreed to strengthen its due diligence and data security practices going forward.
In a separate $2.43 million settlement, T-Mobile agreed to detailed vendor management provisions designed to strengthen its oversight going forward.
The settlement with T-Mobile does not concern the unrelated, “massive data breach” announced by T-Mobile in August 2021, which is still under investigation by a multistate coalition of attorneys general, the settlement notice said.
