Cash App, Block class action lawsuit overview:ย

  • Who: Michelle Salinas and Raymel Washington filed a class action lawsuit against Block, Inc. and Cash App Investing, LLC.ย
  • Why: Salinas and Washington claim Block and Cash App failed to protect their customerโ€™s private information during a December 2021 data breach.ย
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย

Cash App and Block failed to safeguard the information of their customers during a December 2021 data breach, a new class action lawsuit alleges.ย

Plaintiffs Michelle Salinas and Raymel Washington claim Cash App and Blockโ€™s alleged failure to secure their accounts led to โ€œthe unauthorized public release of the personally identifiable information of 8.2 million current and former Cash App Investing customers.โ€ย

The data breach compromised the security of the financial accounts, including Cash App Investing portfolios, of affected customers, they allege.

โ€œThe security of Defendantsโ€™ customersโ€™ Private Information is accordingly of the utmost importance,โ€ states the Block and Cash App class action.ย ย

Salinas and Washington claim that even one instance of their private information being misused or improperly accessed by cybercriminals can โ€œlead to substantial financial losses.โ€ย

โ€œThese costs will not only impact Defendantsโ€™ bottom line but, more importantly, the millions of Cash App Investing users whose Private Information is now in the hands of cybercriminals,โ€ the Block and Cash App class action states.ย

Cash App, Block class action alleges former employee downloaded info without authorization

The data breach came to light after Block disclosed that one of its former employees had downloaded the private information of Cash App investors without being authorized to do so, according to the Cash App and Block class action.ย

While alleging that the exact reason for the data breach โ€œremain unclear,โ€ the plaintiffs argue โ€œthere is no doubt that Defendants failed to adequately protect Plaintiffsโ€™ and Class membersโ€™ Private Information.โ€ย

Salinas and Washington claim Cash App and Block are guilty of breach of contract and negligence and in violation of Californiaโ€™s Unfair Competition Law and the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act, among other things.ย

They demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of actual, compensatory and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.ย

Salinas and Washington want to represent a nationwide class of consumers who had their information compromised in the data breach, along with subclasses from California, Illinois and Texas.ย

A similar class action lawsuit was filed against R.R. Donnelly earlier this month over claims the printing company was negligent in protecting the data of its customers during a 2021 data breach.ย

Not only has my information been sold Iโ€™ve been hacked into my card so many times I had to close my account and that really hurt me because I was in transition from Chicago to California and then to Washington State and I did not have time or the energy or resources or a strength to continue to try and negotiate cash out for any of my money and it seems that thereโ€™s not even records of the money that they had taken from me that never even showed up on my account and I know it it was there because I was there when it was transferred into my cash app account directly calling cash app or contacting cash app I get nothing but automated replies and no help itโ€™s almost like cash up is the fraudulent perpetrator here. All I know is they definitely could use a revamp on theyr entire customer service department.
Iโ€™m truly sick in by a lot of things the banks get away with it cash out really takes the cake right up there with Wells Fargo in my opinion.
So please emphatically PLEEEEZE add me!
