American Express (AmEx) recently notified its customers about a data breach the financial corporation says may have exposed card account numbers, names and other card information, such as expiration dates.
The company says a third-party service provider numerous merchants use experienced “unauthorized access to its system.”
The breach did not compromise American Express systems, the company says in a copy notification letter sent to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation.
“Especially in today’s environment, we understand that your security is paramount,” the data breach notification letter states. “We are strongly committed to protecting the privacy and security of your information and regret any concern this may have caused you.”
American Express advises customers to check statements carefully
American Express advised its customers to check their account statements carefully over the next 12 to 24 months and enable notifications in the American Express mobile app to receive instant notifications of potential suspicious activity.
Customers can also visit the company’s security center to review measures taken to protect their accounts and check the Federal Trade Commission’s identity theft website to find more information on protection, according to the AmEx data breach notification letter.
Individuals with more questions about the breach can contact American Express at 1-855-693-2213.
A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against AmEx in February over claims it failed to live up to its promise to protect customers from fraudulent transactions involving its Serve prepaid debit card accounts.

Please add me, we never received their letter. We have used Amex for 15 years and they have always been a pleasure to work with but lately it’s another story. We were 2 days late paying the bill (and we are never late) and they charged a late fee and interest charges. I called and just assumed they would credit account. NOT was talking to different people– alot of them I couldn’t even understand and had to ask them several times to repeat what they said. Then I did receive credit for late fee but not interest. Asked to speak to supervisor…on hold forever and I ended up hanging up. Then to make things worse after we paid the interest, they charged us next month a “trailing interest fee ” But when I called, they were explaining what a trailing interest fee was… I asked how there could be a fee if we paid it off. Supposedly they credited our account. Also, the more I looked into our account the more it doesn’t make sense. Please add us to the list.
I have been an American Express client for years. Please add me.
