Zithromax May Pose Increased Risk of Stevens Johnson Syndrome

By Anne Bucher

Zithromax skin rashEach year, hundreds of Americans are diagnosed with a serious allergic reaction to medication. This reaction is known as Stevens Johnson Syndrome. While rare, the disease can result in serious, even life-threatening complications. Because the initial symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) are similar to those of the flu, doctors frequently misdiagnose SJS in its early stages. In some cases, initial symptoms may not manifest for more than a week after taking the drug. Symptoms of SJS include:

  • Blistering around the eyes, nose, mouth and genitals
  • Blindness
  • Cellulitis
  • Sepsis
  • Organ damage
  • Permanent skin damage

Zithromax May Pose Increased SJS Risk

Some medications pose a higher risk of patients developing SJS. Azithromycin, sold under the brand names Zithromax and Zmax, has been associated with an increased risk of SJS. Zithromax is a popular antibiotic that is manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Unlike most antibiotics, which need to be taken regularly over a course of 10 days, the Zithromax Z-Pak requires patients to take the drug for only five days.

SJS is especially concerning because it can occur at any time. In many instances, people who have safely used Zithromax in the past will suddenly develop SJS after taking the drug. SJS can afflict people of all ages. Despite the evidence linking Zithromax to an increased risk of SJS, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has not required Pfizer to include an SJS warning on its label. The FDA has expressed its concern that Pfizer downplayed the risks of Zithromax SJS.

Zithromax SJS Victims Claim that Pfizer Failed to Adequately Warn about Health Risks

Many people are taking legal action against Pfizer, claiming that the company failed to warn about the potential for developing Stevens Johnson Syndrome. As a result, patients have suffered from painful, unsightly and life-threatening complications.

Many Zithromax SJS victims had to spend significant time in the hospital, racking up significant medical expenses. In some cases, the Zithromax SJS victims are faced with permanent injuries. As a result, many of these victims file drug injury and product liability lawsuits against the drug manufacturer to recoup their monetary losses. The plaintiffs in these Zithromax SJS lawsuits are seeking compensation for their medical expenses, pain and suffering, emotional distress and other losses they suffered. Most importantly, they are seeking to hold Pfizer accountable for marketing an unsafe product and failing to provide warning about the potentially fatal Zithromax side effects. They wish to protect other potential victims from suffering from Zithromax SJS.
