Zithromax Lawsuits Being Filed Over Heart Problems, Cardiac Death
By Christina Drury
A popular antibiotic called Zithromax (also known as Z-Pak or Zmax) has been linked to a serious increased risk of cardiovascular death. Several Zithromax lawsuits have been filed over drug following reports of severe side effects. Some of the Zithromax lawsuits have been filed on behalf of patients who have died after using the antibiotic. Heart problems that have been linked to Zithromax include:
Cardiovascular Death
Heart Arrhythmia
Heart Attack
Torsades De Pointes
When the amount of prescriptions for Z-Pak are taken into account, there are thousands of potential victims that may have suffered one of these heart problems as a result of the drugmaker failing to properly research the potential risks associated with Zithromax.
Reports of Zithromax Side Effects Under Review by FDA
The FDA announced in May 2012 that they were reviewing potential Zithromax side effects and reports of heart injuries and deaths related to the use of Z-Pak. This announcement followed a study that revealed users of the antibiotic have an increased risk of death within the first five days of using the medication. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, cited researchers from Vanderbilt University that discovered those who used Zithromax were 2.5 times more likely to suffer fatalities linked to Zithromax-related cardiovascular problems than patients who were prescribed Amoxicillin. The study indicated a link between the use of Zithromax and dangerous changes in heart rhythms, which includes QT interval prolongation. These types of changes can lead to a heart condition that is known as torsades de pointes, which can be fatal.
Zithromax Side Effects Not Adequately Researched
First introduced to the medical market in 1991, Zithromax is manufactured and distributed by Pfizer. Generically known as azithromycin, the appeal of this new antibiotic was the decreased treatment period when compared to other antibiotics used for the same purpose. Also available in generic form, the antibiotic has generated more than $450 million in sales in 2011 alone. Zithromax lawsuits against Pfizer allege that the company failed to properly research potential side effects and warn users of the increased risk of heart problems.

I took the first two pills of a Z Pack and my heart stopped a few hours later. I’ve always thought it was the drug that caused it. I was blessed to have a son-in-law, who is a lieutenant at the local police department, who was home that night. He performed chest compressions for 17 plus minutes until the ambulance arrived. The ambulance worker shocked my heart 3 times before they got a rhythm back. I spent two weeks in the hospital and another week in rehab. Do I have a part in the lawsuit?
I have been prescribed/taken zithromax many times and a few years ago had a problem with my heart (beating 260 beats per minute!) and had to go to the hospital. I was close to having a heart attack, and lucky I somehow did not. I was diagnosed with a heart condition and have been on metoprolol ever since. Wondered why this suddenly happened to me….now I know. I was just prescribed zpak at urgent care, as recently as March 8, 2013. Had I known about this, I wouldn’t have taken it. But, why did the Dr. prescribe this drug, knowing I was on Metoprolol??!! Scary!
