Victims Question Lack of FDA Vaginal Mesh Implant Recall

By Andrea Gressman

pelvic organ prolapse treatmentThousands of women have received vaginal mesh implants to treat adverse medical conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence. There have also been thousands of reports of vaginal mesh implant devices causing severe side effects in those who have used the products. Sadly, many of these women had the vaginal mesh surgically implanted without knowing what the potential side effect risks were. And despite the high number of injuries linked to vaginal mesh implants and acknowledgment of how serious this situation is from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the FDA still has not issued a recall for these medical devices.

The lack of a vaginal mesh recall has left many very frustrated, leaving many to wonder how many women need to suffer before there is strong action taken.  Vaginal mesh implants have been on the market since 1996. Since the very beginning women have reported negative side effects such as:

  • Mesh erosion
  • Painful intercourse
  • Severe abdominal pain

The FDA did take notice of the growing number of vaginal mesh implant side effect victims and in 2011 issued a safety warning. It stated that side effects linked to vaginal mesh were “not rare.” It was also their estimate that up to 10% of all women receiving vaginal mesh implants would experience serious side effects within the first year of the implant.

Despite the fact that the FDA has not issued a recall, some of the manufacturers have voluntarily removed their vaginal mesh implant devices from the market. This is likely because they want to control the legal ramifications that the growing numbers of vaginal mesh implant lawsuits will likely lead to.

Vaginal Mesh Implant Side Effects

There are a number of very serious vaginal mesh implant side effects. Some of them include the following:

  • Perforation of the bladder or bowel during surgery
  • Abdominal pain, which may also radiate to the leg, pelvis or vagina
  • Mesh erosion, also referred to as extrusion or protrusion
  • Urinary incontinence or other urinary problems
  • Recurring infection around the mesh area
  • Contraction or shrinkage of the mesh
