Ruby Ronimous filed a lawsuit against transvaginal mesh maker Boston Scientific Corporation on August 12, 2013. According to the vaginal mesh lawsuit, this Missouri resident had The Obtryx Transobturator Mid-Urethral Sling System implanted in January 2009.
Vaginal mesh, vaginal slings and bladder sling implants are commonly prescribed to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress incontinence. However, these devices can also “eat into” tissue and organs, and are implanted in a very sensitive area. Sometimes the complications caused by a vaginal mesh implant are nearly immediate, but other times it takes months or even years to discover what’s happened. By this time, it might be too late. There are cases of women becoming infertile or getting divorced because they can no longer enjoy sex — all because a transvaginal mesh implant failed.
Unfortunately, Ronimous isn’t a rare case. Vaginal mesh lawsuits have been filed by hundreds of women who have suffered sometimes irreversible damage caused by a transvaginal mesh implant. They were told by their doctors, who were often told by the manufacturers via warning labels, that the devices are relatively safe. However, the increasing number of vaginal mesh lawsuits reveals that these devices are severely damaging women. In addition to risking their fertility, marriage and other damaging side effects, the pain and cost of vaginal mesh removal surgery can be severe. Victims face medical bills piling up, and are often forced to take time off of work — leading to a loss in income — to recover from these invasive surgeries.
The tissue and organs that can be punctured by vaginal slings are prone to scarring, which can exacerbate issues. In fact, the scarring is what can lead to infertility for many vaginal mesh sufferers. By filing a transvaginal mesh lawsuit, victims like Ronimous can seek compensation for medical bills, lifelong pain and suffering, and loss of income. Often times, these women claim they were never warned about the vaginal mesh complications and didn’t know what they had signed up for. They thought they were getting a simple treatment for an embarrassing affliction, but they ended up suffering painful complications.
Ronimous is suing Boston Scientific for negligence, design defect, manufacturing defect, failure to warn, breach of warranty, punitive damages and fraudulent concealment.
Understanding Vaginal Mesh Complications
Sometimes women experience extreme pain and discomfort when their transvaginal mesh implant goes awry, but other women don’t notice any changes at all. Often times, the latter condition is the most dangerous. It’s easy to forget about the implant when everything seems to be in order. Women go about their daily lives, unaware that their vaginal mesh is chewing into vital organs. Sometimes it’s not until the damage is beyond repair that the faultiness is discovered.
On the other hand, some women are forced to suffer through months of pain and numerous surgeries in an attempt to remove all the pieces. Once the transvaginal mesh becomes embedded, it can be very difficult — and sometimes impossible — to fully remove. Some women undergo a number of surgeries and are still left with metal pieces in their bodies.
