Vaginal Mesh Protestors Call for Transparency

By Jessica Tyner

transvaginal meshIn Canada in a the city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, a slew of vaginal mesh protestors came out in droves on the weekend of May 13 in support of victims.

Gathering outside the Saskatoon City Hospital, they held signs calling for vaginal mesh information, education and transparency amidst the numerous cases of women suffering painful, complicated and lifelong vaginal mesh side effects. The protestors were comprised of vaginal mesh sufferers, including women who paid well into five figures for surgeries to have the complications treated.

According to the protestors, the vaginal mesh implants were dangerous and defective. These bladder sling and vaginal sling implants are often used to treat vaginal prolapse or incontinence, but the number of victims has been skyrocketing. In the U.S., vaginal mesh class action lawsuits are gathering speed as an increasing number of women come forward with their stories. The protest in Canada is just a hint at what’s to come.

Call to Stop Using Vaginal Mesh Implants

According to the protestors, their goal is to educate the public and stop doctors from implanting these allegedly hazardous devices. One victim, Marika English, says that just two weeks after the implantation she started to experience severe pain — describing it as a vice made of razor blades clinching her pelvis. However, English was somewhat fortunate because she had symptoms soon after the vaginal mesh was implanted. Other victims don’t realize they’re in danger until it’s too late.

The synthetic vaginal mesh used in bladder sling implants has a tendency to eat into the surrounding soft tissue and organs. This can lead to complicated, multiple surgeries, interior scarring and even infertility. Sometimes the vaginal mesh is defective for years before there’s a diagnosis. While the pain some victims go through is intense, others don’t have any warning signs at all that something’s wrong with the vaginal mesh.

Another Protestor Speaks Up

Rosemary Maximovich agrees with English’s statement about the severe pain. She only had the device implanted for six weeks before she began suffering painful cramps. Described as a “cutting feeling,” the mesh had already eroded immediately after implantation and she hasn’t been able to walk (or work) since the experience. Vaginal mesh side effects do a lot more than cause pain, possible infertility and lead to costly medical bills; they can also cause a loss of income.

In the U.S., there are similar vaginal mesh horror stories. No woman would opt for a device with these kinds of side effects if she knew the reality. However, vaginal mesh implants are touted as safe by doctors because the manufacturers don’t include proper warnings according to the victims.
