Vaginal Mesh Injuries a Global Problem

By Jessica Tyner

vaginal mesh implantIf you think vaginal mesh victims are only in America, think again. It’s actually a global problem, and women in other countries don’t always have the same access to check-ups and preventative health as some women in the U.S. do.

Vaginal slings are usually implanted for one of two things: to treat incontinence or for pelvic organ prolapse (POP). POP occurs when organs or tissue “falls into” the vagina, which can cause numerous complications. Vaginal mesh implants can treat these issues, but sometimes with heartbreaking side effects.

POP and incontinence can be embarrassing and/or uncomfortable, but it’s nothing compared to the vaginal mesh side effects numerous women have been reporting around the world. Surgical mesh in these implants has a tendency to erode through the vaginal walls causing infections, severe pain, nerve damage, the perforation or organs and fixing these problems can lead to multiple expensive (and painful) surgeries. Some vaginal mesh victims blame the devices for their divorces since sex can become too painful to bear, and the erosion can even lead to infertility.

Why Aren’t Vaginal Mesh Implants Banned?

There are numerous advocacy groups pushing for the ban of vaginal mesh implants, but so far to no avail. Not all vaginal mesh victims experience cramps or any side effects at all. This means they’re depending wholly on regular checkups to ensure their vaginal mesh is working effectively — and those regular checkups are easy to skip. Even when a person has health insurance, simply seeing a doctor can lead to costly medical bills. All too often, people risk their health because of cost and inconvenience.

Previously, the FDA claimed that complications from vaginal sling implants are rare, but the agency changed its tune in 2011. According to the FDA, vaginal mesh side effects are not rare, and there aren’t many benefits to getting the meshes in the first place. POP and incontinence are certainly issues, but there are other treatments that don’t pose such serious risks. The FDA says women who opt for bladder slings often aren’t aware of the risks.

A Global Crisis

In the U.S. alone, there are more than 18,000 vaginal mesh lawsuits filed thus far at a federal level and 4,000 state lawsuits. However, there are thousands of more vaginal mesh sufferers in many corners of the world. Countries such as New Zealand, Canada, Scotland, Australia and the UK are also undergoing their own vaginal mesh battles. One woman in Scotland likens the experience to a scandal, and Scottish women have rallied to get government support to stop the use of vaginal meshes.

The Scottish woman, Linda McLaughlin, went through nine surgeries to repair her vaginal mesh erosion and now suffers from permanent nerve damage. She’s now a national advocate along with 14 other women and is working diligently to prevent future victims from suffering as she does. However, Scotland — much like the U.S. — has relatively great healthcare. What about woman suffering in other countries?

Are You a Vaginal Mesh Victim?

If you had any type of vaginal mesh or bladder sling implanted and suffered side effects, it’s possible that you have a vaginal mesh legal claim. The pain and suffering, medical bills and inconvenience (to say the least) should result in proper compensation.
