Vaginal Mesh Complications Can Be Debilitating
By Anne Bucher
Vaginal mesh implants and bladder slings are medical devices that treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. While mesh implants have been used to successfully repair hernias, vaginal mesh implants were never tested for vaginal repairs. Because the device is similar to other medical devices that had already been approved, the vaginal mesh manufacturers were not required to perform safety studies on the product. Many women who received the implants have suffered severe, sometimes debilitating health problems.
FDA Claims that Vaginal Mesh Complications are “Not Rare”
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the most common vaginal mesh side effects include:
- Mesh erosion
- Infection
- Pain
- Bleeding
- Urinary problems
- Organ perforation
- Pain during sexual intercourse
The FDA acknowledges that these vaginal mesh complications are “not rare.” The federal agency also warns that the use of vaginal mesh implants may be more harmful than other available procedures for treating pelvic organ prolapse. Studies have shown that as many as 10 percent of women who receive vaginal mesh implants develop significant injuries that require revision surgery and surgical removal of the implant. Because the body tissues eventually attach to the vaginal mesh implant, many women require multiple surgeries to ensure that the device is completely removed. In many instances, the complications from vaginal mesh implants can last years. Some women experience permanent injuries from the implants.
Jury in First Vaginal Mesh Lawsuit Awards $11 Million to Plaintiff
In the first vaginal mesh lawsuit that went to trial, the jury awarded more than $11 million in favor of the plaintiff. In this case, the plaintiff accused Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of the Gynecare Prolift vaginal sling implant, of selling an unsafe and defective product. She insisted that the company failed to perform adequate safety studies on the product before putting it on the market. She claims that the company was aware of the risks associated with the Gynecare vaginal mesh implant but failed to warn doctors and patients about the serious health risks. As a result of the defective product, the plaintiff’s quality of life was severely diminished. The jury required Johnson & Johnson to pay $7.76 million in punitive damages.
Thousands of other plaintiffs have also filed similar vaginal mesh lawsuits, alleging that the product caused them extensive pain, required expensive medical treatment and diminished their quality of life. These vaginal mesh implants are manufactured by many companies, including Bard, AMS, Boston Scientific, Ethicon and Coviden.
