Synthetic Vaginal Mesh Implants Failing as Bodies Reject Them

By John Curran

transvaginal meshThe key issue for vaginal mesh implant failure side effects is that they include polypropylene and metal. When either fails, it results in perforated organs, infections and a host of other problems. What the manufacturers failed to advertise is that there are other options available for treating pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence that do not come with these risks.

For example, the University of Chicago Medical Center notes that synthetic vaginal sling implants may last longer than other options. That is accurate, but it misses out on key points. When these bladder sling implants fail, often as a result of the body rejecting materials like polypropylene, surgeons struggle to fix or remove them. More importantly, the success rate for synthetic vaginal mesh in reducing stress incontinence is only 80 percent after four years. It is unclear what options surgeons have after these vaginal mesh implant failures.

The use of biological tissue, from humans or other options, in vaginal sling implants can actually be a better option in two ways. The urological section at the University of Chicago notes that they do not last as long. That is actually a positive, because it means that if things do not go well, there are fewer bladder sling implant failure side effects. This comes from the other benefit: these can be removed more readily and do not come with the same likelihood of dangerous inflammation and other problems.

Many manufacturers have created synthetic transvaginal mesh implants. However, the fact that many contain polypropylene is problematic for women who react poorly to the plasticine substance. They also do not fit all body types, which is a further cause of problems. Women should know that if these devices no longer fit properly, it can take several surgeries to fix the damage and in some cases it may never be possibly to get back to normal.
