Paxil Birth Defect Lawsuit Removed to Federal Court
By Andrea Gressman
It has been reported that on February 14, 2013, lawyers for GlaxoSmithKline filed a court notice to remove a Paxil birth defects lawsuit (Case No. 2:2013cv00806) to the Pennsylvania Eastern District Court.
The parents in this lawsuit claim that their child developed birth defects as the direct result of the mother taking Paxil while being pregnant. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are Owen Weitzel, Jerome Weitzel, and Melissa Weitzel.
Paxil, also known as paroxetine, is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. This popular SSRI antidepressant received its approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1992. Since then, it has been linked to numerous cases of birth defects.
New Study Affirms Paxil Birth Defects as Pregnancy Side Effect
A study published in January 2013 in the Human Reproduction Oxford Journal showed that using Paxil and other antidepressants while pregnant can increase the following risk of side effects:
- Birth defects
- Miscarriage
- Neurobehavioral effects
- Newborn behavioral syndrome
- Preterm birth
- Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN)
The pregnancy side effects caused by Paxil and other SSRI antidepressants are very serious in nature. There have also been reports of babies dying due to the birth defects they suffered. If you had a child or know of someone who had a child with birth defects that you believe were caused by Paxil or another type of SSRI antidepressant it is important that you know your legal options.
