Patients Harmed by Vaginal Mesh Sue Implant Makers

By Robert J. Boumis

pelvic organ prolapse treatmentVaginal mesh is used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary in women. In these maladies, the organs of the pelvis fall out of place, or require additional support. Surgical mesh implants were promoted as a better alternative to traditional treatments, but mounting evidence suggests that they are more dangerous than standard treatments.

Vaginal mesh implants are woven structures designed for implantation in the body to support organs. There are two types: biological and synthetic. In biological mesh implants, the mesh is woven from biotic material, like animal collagen. The body will eventually wear down biological mesh implants and absorb them. This means that hopefully, by the time the body heals and the pelvic muscles strengthen enough to hold the pelvic organs on their own, the body will have absorbed the mesh. In synthetic mesh implants, the mesh is intended as a permanganate implant. However, all brands and types of mesh have been found to have serious complications for some of the women using them.

Many women who had vaginal mesh implants went on to suffer from serious side effects. These involved the mesh damaging the tissue around it. In some women, the mesh appears to have eroded through the tissues it was suppose to protect, causing damage to the uterus, vagina, bladder and other oranges in the pelvis.

Allegedly, bladder sling implants and vaginal sling implants utilizing synthetic mesh have produced live-threatening bleeding and scarring on the organs of the pelvis. In some cases, mesh appears to have punctured organs like the bowel and bladder. The mesh may also embed itself in various tissues, causing extreme pain. Patients have reported symptoms that lead to a decreased quality of life. These vaginal mesh side effects include pain during sex, abnormal bleeding, pain during urination, and constant discomfort and pain.

These complications often require medical and sometimes surgical intervention. Doctors have to perform painful, invasive surgeries to attempt to remove the mesh. In some patients, tissue had already grown around and enveloped the mesh, making full removal all but impossible.

Early reports from the FDA indicated that these conditions were rare, but serious enough to warrant concern. However, later updates indicated that these complications were much more widespread than initially thought. Over a three-year period (2005-2007), the FDA received over a thousand complaints regarding serious, sometime life-threatening complications caused by vaginal mesh implants. Additionally, their research indicated that these mesh implants were not more effective than standard treatments.

Thousands of vaginal mesh injury lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of pelvic meshes. These lawsuits allege that the manufacturer knew, or should have known about the serious risks associated with this medical product. The lawsuits further allege that women suffered from painful and life-altering suffering from the effects of these devices. Additionally, some of the vaginal mesh lawsuits posit that the various types of mesh offer no benefit over standard treatments which do not carry the same risks associated with vaginal mesh.
