New Propecia Lawsuit Filed by Colorado Man Over Sexual Side Effects
By Andrea Gressman
On October 2, 2012 a resident of Colorado filed a Propecia lawsuit seeking compensatory damages for sexual health injuries from Propecia’s manufacturer. This new Propecia lawsuit was filed in the New York’s Eastern District U.S. District Court.
In January of 2003, the plaintiff started using Propecia at the age of 33. Prior to taking the hair loss drug, his sexual health was good, according to the Propecia lawsuit. However, once he began taking Propecia, he complained of erectile dysfunction caused by the drug, in addition to other sexual side effects and side effects affecting his cognitive skills. The Propecia lawsuit goes on to say that even though he no longer uses Propecia, the side effects still persist.
These Propecia lawsuits have seen Merck at fault for its failure to properly and adequately warn the plaintiffs of the risks of permanent side effects related to sexual health. The Colorado plaintiff alleges the company purposely released a defective product onto market. He is currently seeking compensatory and punitive damages (and possibly others) to make up for his injuries and his significantly diminished quality of life.
Side Effects of Propecia Can Be Immediate and Permanent
The plaintiff, referred to only as his last name “LaQuatra,” among other men have stated that sexual side effects related to Propecia occur as soon as the drug is taken, and they continue long after the patient discontinues use. This claim is supported by many national and international studies.
According to the many Propecia studies, as many as 39% of Propecia users are affected in some way by side effects related to the drug. These side effects can include the following:
* Low libido
* Diminished ejaculate
* Impotence
* Erectile dysfunction
* Cognitive issues
What makes Propecia effective when it comes to hair loss is the fact that the drug prevents Dihydrotesterone, a male hormone that shrinks the hair follicles that can lead to hair loss. However, this may be the very reason that Propecia sexual side effects occur.
Many Propecia users, just like with the Colorado Propecia lawsuit plaintiff, have claimed that their Propecia erectile dysfunction continues long after the patient discontinues use. A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine in 2011 showed that for an average of 40 months, Propecia side effects are still present after patients discontinue use of the drug.
MDL Absorbs Propecia Lawsuit Regarding Erectile Dysfunction Side Effect
The Propecia MDL has several pending Propecia lawsuits. The Colorado plaintiff’s Propecia lawsuit is yet another one. An MDL is a collection of cases, like these Propecia lawsuits, which are similar in nature against a particular defendant. The purpose is to increase effectiveness and efficiency of the process and to quickly reach a verdict, eliminating redundancy and a waste of resources. To achieve this, one judge oversees the Propecia lawsuits.
Propecia Side Effects That Have Resulted in Many Different Propecia Lawsuits
Propecia was approved in 1997 and since that time the hair loss drug has been linked with many different side effects. Some of these side effects include the following:
* Anxiety
* Decreased sperm count
* Depression
* Erectile dysfunction (ED)
* Genital Shrinkage
* Impotence
* Loss of sex drive
* Low libido
