Judge Cracks Down in Vaginal Mesh Implant Lawsuit MDL
By Andrea Gressman
It has been recently reported that the number of vaginal mesh implant lawsuits now exceeds 8,000. As a result, the judge presiding over the vaginal mesh lawsuit MDL has now started to crack down on the manufacturers of these allegedly defective implants.
According to recent reports, this all began in 2011 when the court requested that American Medical Systems (AMS) release all foreign documents that could be potentially helpful in the vaginal mesh implant lawsuit MDL. In the order filed by the court it stated, “The human body’s reaction to implantation of pelvic repair products does not depend on the patient’s nationality, race or native language; adverse reports from France, India, South Africa, Brazil, or Australia are as relevant as those from the United States. Medical research on the efficacy of such products is relevant whether it is written in Greek or English.”
This effort was then continued. Another recent order directed at Boston Scientific requested that they also provide any relevant information regarding their ProteGen, a vaginal mesh sling they manufacture. Boston Scientific had been fighting this order for a number of months. The ProteGen vaginal sling implant was only on the market briefly. This occurred in the 1990’s and only lasted 2 years before a recall was issued due to the side effects it caused.
