Husband of Vaginal Mesh Victim Speaks Up

By Jessica Tyner

vaginal mesh implant problems There are countless horror stories about vaginal mesh implants gone wrong. A vaginal mesh implant is usually inserted to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) or incontinence, and it’s just what it sounds like: A metal mesh device inserted to “prop up” the vaginal walls. It can be effective in treating POP and incontinence, but at what cost? One husband of a vaginal mesh sufferer, Dean, wants everyone to know that it’s not just the woman who suffers when a vaginal mesh implant turns into a nightmare. It can impact a marriage, family and loved ones, too.

Dean’s wife had a vaginal mesh implant inserted in 2010, and he says things have never been the same — and he doesn’t think they’ll get any better. It’s not just his wife who lives the nightmare; he says he suffers along with her. The toughest part for Dean is feeling like he failed in his job to protect his wife and keep her safe. Both Dean and his wife were told the vaginal mesh implantation was safe. However, what was supposed to be a simple surgery has turned into years of pain and suffering with no relief in sight.

Dean’s Vaginal Mesh Story

Dean’s wife had the vaginal mesh implant for two years before it was finally taken out, although he says they had to beg the doctors to remove it. His wife began experiencing severe pain almost immediately after it had been inserted. He described it as two years of hell. They both assumed the symptoms and pain would go away once the vaginal mesh was removed, but they were wrong. It relieved some of the pressure, but the vaginal mesh complications remain long after removal.

Now that Dean’s wife is mesh-free, she still has pain in her lower back and groin, extending down her legs. He also says she has bowel problems, which were not an issue before the vaginal mesh implant or while it was inserted. She’s depressed, and sex is still too painful. The surgeon removed as much of the mesh as possible, but it had eroded and began to eat through Dean’s wife’s flesh, likely causing the ongoing problems. Dean says he doesn’t see things improving anytime soon.

The Couple’s Ongoing Vaginal Mesh Struggle

Dean’s wife doesn’t qualify for disability even though daily activities are a struggle. She’s asked her doctor for stronger pain medication, but been refused. When Dean asked the doctor how this could happen, he was told, “It’s like a car accident — things happen.” Of course, nobody signs up for a car accident. Had Dean and his wife known about the risks of a vaginal mesh device, they wouldn’t have gambled with those odds.

A sexless marriage is challenging at best. Since Dean has no idea if and when his wife will recover, he’s trying to make the best of it. However, as a tertiary vaginal mesh victim, he’s suffering daily along with his wife. Watching his wife live in so much pain and feeling like there’s no way out can put too much strain on a marriage.

I know how Dean feels, I’m in the same boat and it’s shinking fast!

  2. Debra Jackson says:

That is such a sad story. My prayers go out to Dean’s wife and of course Dean as well. I hope that things get better for them and his wife is able to live a normal life again. It’s scary when you cant even trust what a doctor tells (or doesnt tell) you. I hope she can find some relief from her pain and hopefully get the right help.
