Hip Implant Failures Affect More Men, Younger Seniors

By John Curran

metal on metal hip implant class action lawsuit settlementMetal on metal hip implant failures are a common problem for many people who need surgeries because of failing joints. However, new research is indicating that certain demographics have more to worry about. Considering that there are a number of alternatives on the market, it may make sense to avoid devices like DePuy metal hip implants.

A study recently published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Research surveyed data from more than 50,000 total hip replacement patients over a one-year period in the 1990s, and then followed up a little more than a decade later. They found that men are nearly a quarter again more likely to suffer from metal on metal hip implant failures, and those from other devices as well.
Another patient group at risk for damage from DePuy metal hip implant failures and other medical devices are younger adults, specifically those who have just entered retirement. Thanks to lengthening lifespans, the devices can deteriorate, leading to ongoing surgeries known as revisions because they have to fix earlier problems. The doctors argued for more durable options, but had no explanations for the male bias in failures.

Of course, since nearly all manufacturers are dealing with metal on metal hip implant failure issues, it may make sense to strengthen other options. Instead, older devices that rely on various plastics could be revisited: they have many fewer failures per procedure and there is more data about how they can be successfully implanted. There are few if any DePuy metal hip implant failure lawsuit lawyers who would argue that another metal hip implant would cause anything but problems for their clients.

In addition to the numerous revision surgeries to repair problems, Stryker metal hip implant failures can lead to metallosis, which affects cognitive function. In others, the device actually wears down the bone, making it difficult to repair or replace because of the changing dimensions.
