Heart Symptoms to Watch Out for When Taking Zithromax
By John Curran
A recent label update requested by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has improved patients’ awareness of Zithromax heart side effects like torsades de pointes, a rare but potentially fatal heart rhythm abnormality. However, not many people know what torsades de pointes is or what its symptoms are.
Torsades de pointes is a complication of long QT syndrome, a heart rhythm disorder that can cause fast, chaotic heartbeats. These rapid heartbeats may trigger a sudden fainting spell or seizure. In some cases, the erratic heartbeats can occur for a long enough period to cause sudden death.
Many people with long QT syndrome don’t exhibit any signs or symptoms, however. Fortunately, long QT syndrome is treatable. Treatments include limiting physical activity, taking medications to prevent a chaotic heart rhythm, or avoiding medications known to cause prolonged QT intervals.
One of the medications known to cause prolonged QT intervals is Zithromax (azithromycin). A May 2012 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that those taking Zithromax, azithromycin or Z-Pak were twice as likely to die of a heart attack or sudden cardiac event compared to those taking the antibiotic amoxicillin. Those with preexisting heart disease face the highest risk of heart attack and sudden death if taking Zithromax.
Pfizer, the manufacturer of Zithromax, is facing dozens of lawsuits from Zithromax users who say they were not adequately warned of these heart risks. Family members of heart attack victims who died are also suing for the wrongful death of their loved ones.
If you or someone you know developed heart problems while using Zithromax or Z-Pak, you may have legal remedies available to you.
