Generic Propecia Released Despite Pending Lawsuits Over Side Effects
By Andrea Gressman
It was recently reported that a generic form of Propecia has been released by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. The company announced on January 3 that sales for the generic Propecia have already begun and consumers can purchase the popular anti-hair-loss drug in 1 milligram tablets for six months, the same amount that Merck offers Propecia in.
Annual sales for Propecia last year were $136 million in the United States alone. It is estimated that the manufacturer of this new generic version of Propecia could make around $20 million in sales in the six-month time frame that it is exclusively on the market and $30 million over the next fiscal year.
However, not everyone thinks the release of a generic Propecia is a good idea. It was reported by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April of 2012 that it will require label changes for Propecia warning consumers about the dangers of finasteride, Propecia’s active ingredient. This was due to patients reporting negative side effects from Propecia that were not apparent when the FDA was going through the approval process for the drug.
The FDA warning requires Merck to mention the following finasteride side effects:
- Libido disorders
- Ejaculation disorders
- Orgasm disorders
It was also reported that these conditions continued for a long period after the individual stopped taking the medication. There have been hundreds of men across the nation who have filed Propecia lawsuits against the manufacturer. And now with the generic version of the drug it is likely that the number of lawsuits over Propecia side effects is going to continue to grow.
This drug development has been very disappointing to many who are familiar with dealing with Propecia lawsuits. One attorney was quoted in saying, “While it seems to help pharmaceutical companies get in and make a quick buck, it is the consumers who end up suffering because of lack of information about the potential side effects of dangerous drugs.”
He went on to say, “It is sad that pharmaceutical companies often put profits before people. No drug should be introduced to the market until it is properly tested. If there are serious, long-term side effects, consumers should certainly be forewarned. It is heartbreaking to read stories of victims who allege that they had fulfilling lives before they took Propecia. It is sad that pharmaceutical companies often put profits before people. No drug should be introduced to the market until it is properly tested. If there are serious, long-term side effects, consumers should certainly be forewarned.”

I took generic finasteride for about a year for an enlarged prostate. I stopped taking it about 1-1/2 years ago. I am still experiencing sexual problems that started while I was taking the drug. Are there any appropriate class action suits?
