Daypro May Trigger Stevens Johnson Syndrome
By Robert J. Boumis
The drug Daypro (oxaprozin) may trigger the life-threatening skin reaction Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Daypro is a painkiller that belongs to a class of medications called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. These drugs relieve pain by reducing inflammation. In particular, Daypro is used to relieve the pain associated with arthritis, and is only available by prescription.
Certain drugs can trigger dangerous autoimmune reactions, and Daypro has been implicated in such complications. In autoimmune reactions, the body’s own immune system treats its own tissue as a foreign invader.
In Stevens Johnson Syndrome or SJS, the body attacks its own skin. The damage first manifests as a mild fever, which physicians may initially mistake for influenza. However, the reaction progresses to a painful rash with sores, then ulcers. In some cases, the reaction may spread to the eyes and internal organs. The scarring from this damage can leave a patient permanently disfigured or disabled. In cases in which the damage spreads to the eyes or internal organs, this damage may leave survivors with permanent blindness or impaired organ function. Unfortunately, some patients with SJS die from the illness.
In the most extreme cases of SJS, the condition can progress to a more serious form of the illness called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). Patches of the skin die and slough off in TEN. The skin damage is so severe that it resembles thermal burns. In fact, emergency physicians often treat cases of TEN in burn wards, since the damage is so similar. The mortality rate for TEN is more than 40 percent.
A lawsuit investigation has been launched to explore the possibility of a class action lawsuit against the manufacturers of Daypro and other drugs linked to SJS and TEN. These lawsuits may allege that the manufacturers of these drugs were aware of the risks associated with these drugs.

If you or someone you care about suffered from SJS or TEN after taking Daypro, you have almost certainly found yourself in a challenging situation. SJS and TEN are medical emergencies. Such a serious crisis often entails stress and substantial financial burdens. Intensive medical care often goes hand-in-hand with mounting medical costs, lost wages, and potentially lost income potential in cases with permanent side effects. And unfortunately, some patients may die from both SJS and TEN.
In such cases, surviving family members face not only the emotional toll of such a situation, but they also experience financial burdens like unpaid medical bills and final expenses. Regardless of the situation you have found yourself facing, you need to remember that you still have rights, and there are steps that you can take to regain a measure of control over your situation.
