Couple Sues Over Coloplast Vaginal Mesh Implant Injuries
By Andrea Gressman
Coloplast vaginal mesh implants have come under fire in a recent lawsuit filed by a Florida couple. The vaginal mesh implant lawsuit claims that the woman developed varying health problems resulting from the pelvic placement of a Coloplast transvaginal mesh implant.
Vaginal mesh is a commonly used product, particularly in women who have gone through childbirth, menopause, or a hysterectomy. It is not uncommon for a woman to experience pelvic organ prolapse (POP) shortly after menopause, after the delivery of a child, or after a hysterectomy. However, this type of POP treatment is very controversial as there are a number of negative side effects women experience due to the vaginal mesh implant – like the plaintiff in this particular vaginal mesh implant lawsuit.
The Florida couple, who first filed their Coloplast vaginal mesh implant lawsuit on October 19, 2012 in the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California, are not the first to file a transvaginal mesh lawsuit against the manufacturers of vaginal mesh products. In fact, the number of vaginal mesh implant lawsuits are piling up so fast that vaginal mesh injury lawyers are predicting anywhere from dozens to hundreds of cases in the near future in addition to the hundreds that have already been filed. In response, many vaginal mesh injury lawyers are offering services to help women recover compensation for the injuries they have incurred after receiving vaginal mesh placement.
The vaginal mesh lawsuit alleges that Coloplast, a Danish vaginal mesh implant manufacturer, is responsible for the woman’s injuries because they developed and marketed the vaginal mesh product and did not provide accurate statements about the possible side effects of Coloplast vaginal mesh implants.
Why Are Vaginal Mesh Implant Products Used?
Prolapse refers to the dropping of the pelvic organs — namely the bladder, rectum and uterus — into the vagina. In order to treat pelvic organ prolapse, vaginal mesh products are used to hold the organs in place. This mesh product was first introduced in the 1990s. Basically, a synthetic mesh is implanted into the pelvic region via surgery to keep the organs from prolapsing. Common and less severe side effects of vaginal mesh include urinary incontinence and constipation. However, several women have stepped forward in recent years complaining of more serious complications.
Severe Side Effects Caused by Vaginal Mesh Implants
Serious complications associated with vaginal mesh include erosion of the synthetic mesh material, which can in turn lead to organ puncturing, perforation of the vaginal tissue, infection, pain and bleeding, which may become worse with intercourse and so on. Even worse is the fact that eroding mesh can in turn cause recurring prolapses as well as a number of other issues ranging from scarring to neuromuscular troubles occurring in the pelvic region.
FDA Issues Warning Regarding Vaginal Mesh Implants
In response to the recent wave of complaints, the FDA issued a health warning to the public regarding the side effects of vaginal mesh. The warning was first released by the FDA in 2008 and listed all of the potential side effects associated with the use of synthetic mesh. Women were warned to weigh the side effect risks against the benefits. The FDA then revised the warning in 2011 by stating the erosion of vaginal mesh is not uncommon. Furthermore, the FDA discovered that surgery using vaginal mesh usually fails to correct problems associated with pelvic prolapses.
