Couple Sues Boston Scientific Over Vaginal Mesh Complications

Debra Glasman and her husband Michael J. Glasman have joined the multidistrict litigation against Boston Scientific over complications allegedly caused by the company’s transvaginal mesh products.

Multidistrict litigation or MDL is a type of mass lawsuit similar to a class action lawsuit. In both class action lawsuits and MDL, a number of plaintiffs allege that they have suffered from similar injuries caused by the same defendant. In both types of legal actions, consolidating the lawsuits saves parties time and money, and avoids duplicating efforts in separate, similar lawsuits. Initially, surgeons cut surgical mesh into special shapes for pelvic surgeries. Surgical supply companies capitalized on this niche, creating pre-cut mesh specifically designed for pelvic surgeries. Since it was based on existing medical technology, pelvic mesh was able to legally bypass many steps of clinical testing.

Many patients who received pelvic mesh implants went on to suffer from serious, painful complications. Some patients experienced erosion, a condition wherein the mesh cuts its way through the very tissues it is designed to protect. In other patients, the body grows around the mesh, causing pain. This condition, called embedment, often requires surgery to remove the offending mesh. In some cases, surgeons cannot successfully remove all of the mesh, leaving the patient with permanent pain and vulnerability to further complications.
