Daughter Sues Fresenius for Father’s GranuFlo Cardiac Death

By Amanda Antell

Fresenius wrongful death lawsuitCalifornia plaintiff Ashley Revada is suing Fresenius Medical Care for the wrongful death of her father, Anthony Revada. Her father died of sudden cardiac death after receiving dialysis treatment. In her GranuFlo lawsuit, Ashley alleges that her father’s death was directly related to the dialysis medications GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, which are manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care.

On September 17, 2011, the decedent’s father went for his routine dialysis treatment at the Huntington Dialysis Center in Pasadena, California. After two hours of treatment, he started feeling the symptoms of a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, he died upon arriving at the hospital. Upon further investigation, it was found that GranuFlo and NaturaLyte were closely associated with heart attack and likely contributed to Anthony’s GranuFlo cardiac death, according to the lawsuit.

Revada alleges in the GranuFlo lawsuit that her father and his physicians were unaware of the possible consequences of using the Fresenius dialysis products. Because Fresenius made no effort to warn the plaintiff or decedent of these side effects, Ashley asserts that the defendant is directly responsible for her father’s death and must face the legal consequences.

Ashley is suing Fresenius, alleging that the company is directly responsible for manufacturing, distributing, marketing and selling a dangerous product. The charges in her GranuFlo lawsuit include negligence, concealing information, and false advertising.

Overview of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Complications

Both GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are dialysis concentrates that are designed to maintain balance of the acid and base levels in the blood. GranuFlo is a dry dialysis concentrate that is dissolved into a liquid used in dialysis treatments. NaturaLyte, its liquid cousin, serves the same purpose. Due to the unique formulations of these dialysis products, patients receive a high level of bicarbonate from each treatment, which can lead to significant complications. GranuFlo and NaturaLyte side effects include, but are not limited to:

  • Cardiopulmonary Arrest
  • Metabolic Alkalosis
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Death

On March 29, 2012, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class 1 recall of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte from the United States market. Fresenius voluntarily complied with the FDA’s recall after an internal memo from the company was leaked, revealing a startling in-house study conducted by the company. The memo did not disclose the specific findings of the study, but did inform their clinics and doctors of the potentially dangerous GranuFlo and NaturaLyte side effects. Non-Fresenius doctors and clinics, the general public and the rest of the medical community were not notified about these risks. The Fresenius study found that more than 900 patients had suffered from stroke or heart attack after using GranuFlo and NaturaLyte products.

GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Litigation Movement

Ashley is seeking compensation for medical compensation, pain and suffering and other damages. Her GranuFlo lawsuit will join up with multidistrict litigation (MDL) centered in Massachusetts. By joining the MDL, she will join other plaintiffs who allege similar injuries or death.

The GranuFlo/NaturaLyte MDL is In Re: Fresenius GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Dialysate Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 1:13-md-02428-DPW, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
