Best-Selling Antibiotic Linked to Heart Failure
By Robert J. Boumis
People forget that many processes in the human body are literally electric. The human heart in particular has a very complex system of nerves that coordinate the various muscles needed to keep this biological pump running smoothly. However, one extremely popular antibiotic, Zithromax, may cause changes in the electrical systems of the heart. These changes can lead to lethal side effects like heart failure.
Zithromax is a powerhouse drug. It dominates the market for antibiotics. Zithromax is the trade name of azithromycin, and also sells under the name Azithrocin, Zmax, Z-Pak, and Azin. It belongs to the macrolide class of antibiotics, and works by interfering with bacteria’s ability to synthesize proteins. This makes the drug very effective against a wide variety of bacterial infections, including everything from food poisoning to STDs. This has led to Zithromax and its derivatives being one of the best – if not the best – selling antibiotics in the world. In the United States alone, Zithromax sales generate more than a billion dollars per year in revenue.
However, despite Zithromax’s widespread use, evidence has begun to mount that this drug may cause serious complications for some patients. In 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a safety warning over concerns regarding Zithromax side effects on the human heart.
The FDA’s safety communication stated that some Zithromax patients had developed a potentially fatal change in heart rhythm. The macrolide class of antidepressants was already known to cause dangerous irregular heartbeats. However, Zithromax was believed to be the “gentle sister” of the group, the only drug in the family that did not cause health problems.
However, post-market surveillance found that the drug was associated with an increased risk of heart problems, even when compared to control subjects on unrelated antibiotics. These risks were most pronounced in patients with existing heart problems. However, the FDA did not advise patients to stop taking their medication without consulting their physicians, but advised health care providers to discuss these risks with patients.
Since Zithromax is so widespread, thousands could be injured by these lethal Zithromax heart side effects. New Zithromax lawsuits are filed against the manufacturer of this drug, Pfizer, every month. The lawsuits allege that Pfizer knew, or should have known, about the potentially fatal side effects associated with Zithromax.
Zithromax lawsuits further allege that the pharmaceutical company failed to act on this information in a timely manner and instead actively downplayed the risk of lethal Zithromax side effects, preventing patients and their prescribing physicians from having the information they needed to make informed medical decisions.
If you or someone you care about took Zithromax and went on to suffer from serious side effects, you may feel overwhelmed. Cardiovascular problems – or the death of a loved one – can completely turn your life upside down.
