Man with stomach painYet another lawsuit has been filed against surgical supply companies Bard and Davol, citing complications stemming from polypropylene inguinal hernia mesh implant devices.

Plaintiff Patrick H. filed his lawsuit against C. R. Bard and Davol Inc. on Feb. 1, 2019, claiming that the medical supply companies’ hernia mesh is dangerous and defective, and caused him to suffer lasting complications.

Patrick says he underwent surgery at Bon Secours Hospital in Baltimore in early February of 2016. His surgery was intended to repair a left side inguinal hernia. A medium BardMesh PerFix Plug, a type of hernia mesh, was implanted at this time, he says.

However, Patrick claims that the surgical mesh caused more problems than it fixed. In his inguinal hernia mesh lawsuit, Patrick claims that he has suffered permanent and ongoing injuries as a result of the PerFix Plug. These injuries and problems include:

  • Bowel protrusion
  • Partial bowel obstruction
  • Nerve damage due to mesh adhesion
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Genital numbness, tingling, and pain
  • Constant pressure in the groin area
  • Severe pain
  • Problems with gait and walking
  • Incontinence
  • Painful and prolonged constipation

About the BardMesh PerFix Plug

The plug implanted in Patrick is a three dimensional hernia mesh implant made out of multiple layers of polypropylene. Despite the claims of many surgical supply companies, there is ample scientific research showing that polypropylene elicits an allergic reaction in many people.

According to the results of a clinical trial published in 2016, heavyweight mesh may be more likely than lightweight mesh to elicit an immune response in patients. Immune responses to surgical mesh may make the mesh more likely to degrade or fracture, as well as causing chronic internal inflammation and pain.

Possible Surgical Mesh Complications

Reactions to surgical mesh implants can be severe. According to the FDA, these reactions may include recurrence of hernia, chronic pain, improper wound healing, infection, rejection of the mesh, or chronic inflammation.

If the mesh fractures or adheres to the internal organs, it may result in the formation of an abscess or fistula, tissue damage, or nerve damage. Bowel obstructions and perforations have been reported, along with mesh shrinkage or migration.

The shape and weave of the material used in the PerFix plug may also allow bacteria to enter the mesh. This bacteria may live in the mesh and promote infection in the nearby organs.

Surgery to remove infected or damaged surgical mesh may be risky or difficult. If the mesh has fractured, it may require multiple surgeries to remove all the pieces.

If you have been implanted with the Bard PerFix Plug or another surgical mesh product, you may be eligible to join a free inguinal hernia mesh lawsuit investigation and pursue compensation for your injuries.

Patrick’s Inguinal Hernia Mesh Lawsuit is Case No. 1:19-cv-00311-CCB, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
