Mitsubishi recalls over 108,000 vehicles due to liftgate issue

Mitsubishi is recalling more than 108,000 vehicles in the United States due to a problem with the liftgate gas spring cylinders. This issue could lead to the liftgate falling unexpectedly, posing a risk of injury.

The recall notice was published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on April 20.

It affects 108,046 Mitsubishi vehicles, including the 2018–2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and 2014–2020 Mitsubishi Outlander models. 

The problem arises from the liftgate gas spring cylinders, which may corrode over time, leading to a loss of pressure and potential rupture. “A gas spring cylinder rupture or a liftgate falling unexpectedly can increase the risk of injury,” the recall notice states.

This Mitsubishi recall is an expansion of a previous recall from August 2025, which affected more than 90,000 vehicles. 

Mutsubiushi to replace Outlander liftgate springs at no cost

Mitsubishi has committed to replacing the left and right liftgate gas springs at no cost to the vehicle owners. This remedy aims to prevent any future incidents related to the Mitsubishi recall and the liftgate defect. 

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by June 17.

Mitsubishi says it has not received any reports of injury related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the Mitsubishi Outlander recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
