A Georgia woman recently filed an Onglyza heart failure lawsuit, alleging the diabetes drug caused life-threatening injuries.
The plaintiff, Cynthia T., began taking Onglyza at the direction of her doctor in 2013 in order to treat her type-2 diabetes, helping to lower her blood sugar levels. Cynthia continued taking Onglyza for some time, until 2014.
Unfortunately, during her use of the diabetes drug, Cynthia says she began suffering from a number of dangerous side effects, including but not limited to heart failure. Her injuries, the Onglyza heart failure lawsuit claims, were caused directly by her Onglyza intake, and caused physical and mental injuries, pain, loss of earnings and medical expenses.
In her Onglyza heart failure lawsuit, Cynthia claims that Bristol-Myers Squibb, Onglyza’s manufacturer, was aware that its drug was linked with heart failure and other serious injuries, yet continued to market the drug as safe and effective.
A growing number of type-2 diabetes patients like Cynthia and even their family members are reporting Onglyza complications linked with the popular diabetes medication. Some have begun filing lawsuits against the drug manufacturer over heart failure from Onglyza and other complications, alleging that they were not adequately warned of the risks.
Background of Onglyza
Onglyza (also known by its generic name, saxagliptin) is a popular treatment for type-2 diabetes, and is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Onglyza is a relatively new drug, and was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009. Since its release onto the market, the popularity of Onglyza has steadily increased. In fact, sales of this diabetes drug are projected to soon reach $2 billion annually, despite being available for under a decade.
Incretin mimetics like Onglyza are used to mimic the body’s natural incretin hormones, which stimulates insulin releasing after a meal, helping to control the blood sugar level of a diabetes patient.
Despite the popularity of incretin mimetics, these drugs have been linked in a number of studies with serious complications, including heart failure. A recent study shows a link between these diabetes drugs and an increased risk of heart failure and hospitalization.
Even a study funded by the manufacturers of the drug found that patients who used saxagliptin faced a higher rate of heart failure-related hospitalizations. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2013, and found that patients who took Onglyza were more likely to be hospitalized due to heart failure than those who took other medications.
Filing an Onglyza Heart Failure lawsuit
If you or someone you love has suffered or died from heart failure from Onglyza or other serious side effects, you may be able to file a Onglyza heart failure lawsuit.
Filing an Onglyza heart failure lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by heart failure from Onglyza, but it can help to alleviate financial costs from medical expenses and lost wages.
The Onglyza Heart Failure Lawsuit is Case No. 1:17-cv-02782-SCJ, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.
In general, Onglyza lawsuits and Kombiglyze XR lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
