The class action lawsuit claims the maker of the online security system unfairly hides a monthly service fee from buyers, even though the system is rendered useless if customers do not pay the fee.

Lead plaintiffs Brandon Jack and Jean Alda bought two different Ring doorbell security camera systems, costing about $450, in 2017. Nowhere on the box were buyers alerted a monthly subscription would be required, they said. 

The initial complaint alleges this contrasts with the first line of Ring video doorbell security cameras sold in stores. “Ring Video Doorbell 1,” as it is named in the initial complaint, was introduced to the public in 2013 and is still sold in physical stores for about $100. 

According to the Ring Doorbell class action lawsuit, that product’s box clearly notifies shoppers the Ring video doorbell requires a $3 a month fee to access its online streaming features. 

“The fact that such notice and disclosure was expressly placed by Defendant on the outside of the sealed box of the Ring Video Doorbell 1 — a product which is still being sold today — shows that Defendant considered this information to be material to consumers …,” the class action lawsuit says. 

Jack and Alda allege this fee information should be clear on all of the Ring video doorbell security systems because it’s “nothing more than an expensive electronic alternative to looking out one’s window” without the ability to record or pull up video. 

These features are essential to the Ring video doorbell’s value, Jack and Alda argue, and are a major reason people buy them. 

Beyond pricing issues, Ring customers in another class action lawsuit against the company claim it violates privacy and has been known to provide data to law enforcement agencies.

    Add me they’ve been charging me for the last four years and I never gave them my card information. They just charged me again and I had recently gotten a new card? The only place I’ve entered my new card number is on Amazon! Coincidence? Never did I sign up for this monitoring.

    I have the doorbell and looking to file suit it didn’t capture the theft of my vehicle and it has gaps in the video feed. You can see the vehicle gone but never recorded how it left or when. We pay a yearly fee for crappy service and they alway blame our internet service. but we have a device right next to the modem and it doesn’t capture anything at all. Looking to file a suit against ring because they are not honoring then service they provide there is no since of security at all and the app takes so long to load.

    Bought this in December 2020 at the request of my wife (should have read some reviews first). Yeah, Ring is useless unless you pay the monthly fee. What is worse now, is that the Windows desktop app will no longer work after October 15, 2021. That’s huge for me as I can NEVER get the mobile app to work. It will notify me that “there is motion in the front yard”, but refuses to load the video. And no, it isn’t my phone as I have had the Ring app on an Apple iPhone 6S, iPhone 7 and now on a shiny new iPhone SE. The app won’t load video on any of these phones, regardless of what WiFi I am on or LTE. Ring is basically just a SCAM, a useless steaming pile of crap in a fancy, over-engineered box. To add insult to injury, they now won’t let you log in without two factor authentication, which goes to my wife’s phone number as it has been set up in her name. I HATE everything about Ring!

    Add me. I have dropped almost 2k in ring products, get home, set it up and a few months later, I no longer have any video playback. I was forced to try the paid service so I didn’t just have 7 cameras around my house just to see who is currently walking by. After spending this kind of money to only find out later that I have to pay for their service or don’t use the cameras. It feels like I was strong armed into spending more money. They say “for 3 to 10 dollars a month you can have professional monitoring”. What they mean is “spend more money or you just wasted alot, now that we gave you free service until you can no longer return our product, you won’t have a choice”

    I was told the fee is $10, and just received notice that my “trial” is over and I have to sign up to a plan. There was nothing on or in the packaging that said I’d get a trial and then have to pay monthly for the most basic and promised features! I’m fighting them, but please add me, this is just plain bait and switch! I would have returned it if I’d known about the fee, but now a year plus later, it’s too late! So frustrating!

    Notice how they give us just long enough to not return the product with a free trial. There are far better options on the market what the hell are we paying a 3 dollar sub for

    Add me to the class action. Bought rings, no idea about subscription now I have two useless doorbells permanently attached to my siding. They should pay to replace my siding.

    Add me to the lawsuit. I got my ring 6-14-20 and was never advised there would be a monthly fee. Now after I call them exactly 1 year later 6-14-21 to complain I can’t see videos, only asking to subscribe for $3/month, or $30/year is ridiculous.

      Add my name to the lawsuit too! Have had it hooked up just over a year. Tried to go back and look at previous days footage but can’t since we didn’t have a subscription. Nowhere on the box or materials did it say ‘free trial’ then would have to pay to view previous days. Without subscription can only view LIVE video. Total BS.
