RealPage Utility Management agreed to a $1.8 million settlement to resolve claims it acted as an illegal collection agency when it charged administrative fees on monthly statements.

The settlement benefits individuals who received a utility usage statement that included an administration fee from RealPage Utility Management regarding a Maryland residence that included an administration fee between April 1, 2017, and June 30, 2023.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim the company violated Maryland law by acting as an unlicensed collections agency. The company allegedly sent monthly statements to consumers for utilities and other fees, including unlawful administrative fees.

RealPage is a utility management company that offers services to residents and businesses.

RealPage Utility Management hasn’t admitted wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.8 million settlement to resolve the class action lawsuit.

Under the settlement terms, class members can receive a pro rata payment in proportion to the amount in administration fees the class member was charged, compared to the total amount in administration fees charged to all class members who file valid claims. Those charged more in these fees will receive more than those charged less, and each class member’s payment will increase or decrease depending on the total number of claims filed.

No payment estimates are available.

In addition, the company has agreed to apply for a Maryland collection agency license.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is April 20, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for May 28, 2024.

Class members must submit a valid claim form by Sept. 2, 2024, to receive a settlement payment.
