Walmart front-end checkout registerA recent class action lawsuit claims that Walmart negligently allows scammers to steal Green Dot prepaid Visa card information.

Walmart offers several prepaid Visa cards, including products through Green Dot Bank. According to a recent Walmart, Green Dot class action, these cards may be susceptible to fraud.

Plaintiff Guillermo Espinoza says he purchased two $500 prepaid Green Dot Visa cards in February 2019, which he intended to use to pay his rent in March.

The day after he purchased the Green Dot cards, Espinoza reportedly attempted to make a payment on his rent only to be denied several times due to “insufficient funds.”

Espinoza allegedly went back to his local Walmart and asked an associate for guidance. The employee reportedly told him to try again later in the day or the next day, “stating that she believed it may just take a few days for the cards to activate.”

In the same day, Espinoza reportedly called the toll free number on the back of the cards and was told by the automated system that his cards had an available balance of $499 and $500, respectively.

On March 1, Espinoza reportedly repeated the process and learned that one of his cards had a posted transaction for $498.74 at a Walmart in Hemet, Calif. His other card reportedly had a “nearly identical” transaction for a $497.74 charge at the same Walmart.

“Upon seeing the charges to the Plaintiff’s Greendot cards, Plaintiff was furious, confused, and anxious as he needed the funds to pay his rent,” the Walmart, Green Dot class action claims.

Espinoza reportedly attempted to dispute the fraudulent charges with Green Dot but the bank allegedly directed him towards Walmart. He says he called the Hemet Walmart where a floor manager told him that similar “scams” had recently occurred. Information from the prepaid cards was reportedly “compromised.” According to the Walmart Green Dot class action, the manager allegedly told Espinoza “…as soon as they get activated a hacker can liquidate the gift cards.”

Following this conversation, Espinoza was allegedly directed to corporate Walmart’s fraud hotline. He reportedly opened up an investigation with the hotline and filed a police report. After sending his information to the hotline on March 2, Espinoza was reportedly forced to wait while the company investigated. He allegedly called every three to four days to request updates but was given no information.

On March 15, Espinoza reportedly checked again on the investigation and was told that Walmart could not do anything to help him because they were “not liable for those Visa gift cards.” He was then directed back to Green Dot Bank despite having already talked to the company. Green Dot allegedly said they too were not liable for the cards and suggested that this sort of scam was common.

According to the Walmart, Green Dot class action, Espinoza was told that scammers obtain the Green Dot card information prior to genuine purchases. After customers purchase the cards, scammers reportedly attempt $1 purchases to see if the cards are activated. After the products are activated, scammers are allegedly free to spend the rest of the available balance.

Espinoza argues that Walmart and Green Dot Bank do not sufficiently protect the information on the pre-paid cards, making them susceptible to scams and fraud.

“Walmart chooses to sell its Greendot funded Visa Debit Cards in unsecure packaging, wherein the identifying information is exposed to any third parties who come in contact with the Visa Debit Card prior to selling the cards to unsuspecting consumers,” the Walmart class action claims.

Espinoza seeks to represent a Class of California consumers who purchased Green Dot Visa prepaid cards from Walmart with balances of more than $50.

I had my card hacked and all my funds either charged or transferred. Wasn’t able to login to my account due to hacker changing email on file to one I was not familiar with thus making it impossible to access the account or verify my identity. Called several times and finally someone listened, had a hard time comprehending what I was trying to explain, but in the end said he would shut off card and gave me an a dispute claim number. Never received an email confirming the dispute, someone sent me money and it was successfully deposit to the card (when it was suppose to be closed) and at week two I got emails saying I was overdrawn! I was furious! I feel violated on top of being violated. In the slowest and most excruciatingly attempt to communicate and explain the issue, 2 hours later I got another dispute claim number, sigh. Then I got an email confirming the dispute by with all the wrong things disputed. I’m sick of this run around crap and feeling so helpless. Please, I want to do whatever is possible to keep them from hurting otherx.

I filed a dispute 4/25/21 for 677.00 taken from my vault. On 5/4/21 it was put back on the compromised, now closed account. I requested a refund and provided all the documentation and told to wait 2 weeks. Tomorrow will be 91 days. First, NO ONE speaks English and if you ask for someone who does, you get hung up on, which happens at least 4 out of 5 calls, or eternal hold, transferred 100 times, then hung up on. Injave not received a letter, an email or a phone call to date providing any status information. Not only are they with holding my money (while collecting interest on MY Money), they are also with holding my status information. They have broken too many laws to even count them. I’ve been reading reviews for 3 hours and it appears, I’m certainly not alone. I’ve filed complaints with 12 different sources and will be filing theft and fraud charges against them on Monday morning. I’ve been told they have everything they need and to wait 2 more weeks over the last 2 months. I want my money, the interest they have racked up on my money they have been sitting on for 91 days. I’ve been a customer for over 10 years, never had a problem, until now. Now, I’m done. I’d certainly be interested in a Class Action Suit as well. I just sent my last email which was a “Demand For Status” , Statements, since they closed the account which was compromised and now closed with a balance of $677.00 !Absolutely, ridiculous.

My sister in law is going through the same thing. They drained her account, almost $3000. Someone had changed her email and phone number and took the money out of her vault. Heres the real kicker. This money has not actually been paid to the fraudsters, it is still pending but all Green Dot will do is cancel her card and they said they can’t do anything until the transaction is either approved or disapproved. So even though they know it is fraud they can’t do anything. What kind of bank lets someone change the email and phone number on an account and then drain it without it sending up flags. Wells Fargo will freeze my card if I do to many transactions in 1 day until I verify that it is me , let alone if I was to change my number and email. This bank has security issues and they could care less.I know she would hop on the class action lawsuit train in a minute.

I’ve had my Walmart Green dot card wirh my direct deposit going on it; for 10yrs now with no problem. Well until now I had my direct deposit posted on Wed. 06/02/21 and my card was “Blocked for further review”on Thurs. 06/04/21. I have a balance of $1100 in thr vault of the card. Called thr number on the back of the card, to be told they don’t have any information for me, just the card can’t never be used again. Where does the remaining balance on the card goes, I asked the hardly English speaking lady told me its no recourse. I am pissed.

Two days later when i went to order something online the card had been used (by Ding and Apple.com/Bill) these transactions had used almost all my money. Although Walmart moneycard has replaced and sent me a new card, they will not let me activate the cards saying i have a block on because of security risk. I just want my money how can i get my money off this card and then close out the account. No one at the phone number 1-866-946-2510 wants to help. All i ask is just return the balance of my money on my account and they can close out the account. Who can i talk to that will help me get my money. sue1989garr@gmail.com

I purchased a Visa Prepaid Card from Walmart for $250.00. I tried to register and it failed, advising me to call a phone number. I called the phone number on the back of the card to register and after they took my information, they hung up on me. I called again and got such a poor connection I could not understand the people on the other end. I called again the next day and could not get a good connection so although I wasn’t sure it was registered, I decided to make a $2.00 purchase with it to see if it was activated. The card had been wiped of funds and it only had $1.70 left on the card.

I called the number on the back of the card again, and found out that the same day to find out where the purchases had occurred and there had been several transactions on the card, all to Sephora. I called customer service and they created a case for me requesting that I send in documentation that I had purchased the card with a picture of the front, back and the receipt. I sent it to them and heard nothing.

I called them again with the case number and they couldn’t find the case. They created a second case number and I again called to find out the status of the case and they could not find this one either. I gave them the first case number as well and they indicated that they had closed that case because the funds had been spent?!?!

This Prepaid Visa Card sold at Walmart is a complete scam and it is being perpetrated through Walmart’s website or phone registration system.

I purchased a green dot card and deposited $500 on it activated only to have green dot locket only a few mins after. There service department must be exhausted as they ether hang up ignore or play feedback to ya.
I read several same complaints most never get refunded or long battel. Some used green dot as bank for direct deposit and had larger amounts frozen and then never payed , they cheated hard working tax payers from there money.
I have got nowhere with them read only to know what to expect next , its all the same for me as I read about. Its like a protocol. Its got to be STOPPED. The public and card holders need warning before they victims..
They have consumed so much of my time on this I like to give up the 500 bucks but it seem principal over rides the value. Looking into lawyers for a day in court and other victims they have cheated.
Feeling they got something going on with all similar complaints .
Feeling if true they need stoped.
Feeling they need do right thing n refund people’s money when asked.
Mostly I feel a fool not to have read bout them before losing 500.

I recently opened an account with Walmart with with Green Dot Bank. I I have had trouble since I’ve ever started doing business with him the small hacking of taking your money they never give you money back and this time someone took $170 and that was all the money I had and they never disputed it when they said they would now they don’t answer the phone and when you do get one did they act like they can’t hear you and they hang up on you also there’s other hacking the smaller but I did was more worried about this one and I look on here and see this is happening to people everywhere I had a nervous breakdown because I needed that money I went hungry that was all the money I they told me it’s time that I ordered a card that I didn’t have to change routing or nothing because the account number has nothing to do with it I did not even think this will be a real thing I called Green Dot bank they said they’re not associated with Walmart now someone has allowed them and it’s Walmart that they hacked into my account they have a phone number and an email that they put in there that has stars and you can’t tell what it is and the man on the phone at Walmart when I could get to us he says he don’t know any members on there he doesn’t see any well I got screenshots someone has open multiple accounts and they have been doing this and I just want to let everyone know that they do play like they can’t hear you and when you mention money back they hang up on you and to think I was going to try to attempt to do this again then they told me to download a dispute form but you have to pay for the PDF and it’s a monthly fee I never would have thought Walmart we’ve done this but why wouldn’t I think this could happen they said they were secure in their savings and checking’s and everything and I can tell you that I’m glad that this happened because it could have been worse
