A brand of 100% organic tampons are unraveling inside users’ bodies, causing some to have to seek medical attention to get bits of cotton removed, a new nationwide class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Kimberley Manson filed the class action complaint against company ALYK Inc. in a New York federal court last Wednesday, alleging the company’s LOLA tampons don’t have a protective coating to stop them from shedding inside consumers, Law360 reports.

She alleges the issue has affected dozens of consumers at least, with the complaint including examples of 30 reviews pulled from the company’s website detailing how the tampons have fallen apart inside people.

Manson says the issue can lead to vaginal infections, irritation and injury, and she is looking to represent a nationwide Class of consumers who have used the tampons, plus a New York Subclass.

She’s seeking not only damages for affected customers, but also a recall of the tampons.

“The defect is a nuisance that no reasonable consumer would expect to incur when using a tampon,” the class action lawsuit reportedly says.  “Moreover, it is an unacceptable safety hazard requiring a prompt recall.”

Mason says she bought the LOLA tampons from Walmart in February. When she was removing one of the tampons, she says it disintegrated and unraveled, leaving behind pieces of cotton inside her and causing “burning sensations”.

She says LOLA has been made aware of the faulty tampon design, but hasn’t done anything about it. Reviews included in the class action complaint includes examples of women having to seek medical assistance to get the tampon pieces out of their vaginas.

Despite the LOLA tampons purporting to be “gynecologist-approved,” Mason says the products are not safe and she would not have bought them had she known they would disintegrate inside her.

The alleged defect affects all LOLA sanitary products, Mason alleges, because all of the tampons lack a protective outer coating.

She’s suing for violations of New York General Business Law, breach of warranty, fraud, unjust enrichment and negligent misrepresentation.

Class action lawsuits against tampon manufacturers can sometimes end in payments to consumers. Last year, a $7 million class action settlement was announced that ended allegations that U by Kotex tampons could unravel or come apart when inserted into women’s bodies.
