A California man recently filed a Stryker V40 lawsuit against Stryker Orthopaedics, alleging the hip implant device caused serious injuries.
The plaintiff, Larry S., was implanted with a Stryker V40 device in April 2007 during a left total hip arthroplasty. The hip implant was meant to alleviate symptoms of his left hip degenerative joint disease.
Seven years after the initial implantation, Larry says, his hip implant malfunctioned as he “experienced dissociation of the femoral head from the trunnion.”
This dissociation of hip implant components led to a revision surgery in November 2014. According to Larry’s surgeon, the femoral head had come off the trunnion, which was severely warn. The femoral head itself was “generating all of the metal debris.” The V40 component was removed because of these injuries.
In response to the defective device and subsequent injuries and risks, Larry decided to file a Stryker V40 lawsuit. It took him some time, however, to identify a link between the V40 device and his injuries. It wasn’t until Larry saw a TV ad, the Stryker V40 lawsuit notes, that he recognized that his injuries may have been caused by a faulty device.
Larry filed his Stryker V40 lawsuit on multiple counts, including negligence, design defect, manufacturing defect, inadequate warning, and breach of express and implied warranties.
Stryker V40 Femoral Head Defects
Stryker V40 femoral head components like those included in Larry’s Stryker hip system have been connected with a variety of serious complications, including metallosis, which is a kind of metal poisoning.
Metallosis problems are often linked with metal-on-metal hip implants like the ones incorporating Stryker V40 femoral heads. These kinds of hip implants allow its metal components to rub together. Over time, this releases excessive amounts of metals like cobalt and chromium into the bloodstream and surrounding tissue, which can lead to serious and even permanent problems. Stryker V40 femoral heads have also been connected with an increased risk of dislocation or dissociation.
Lawsuits like Larry’s Stryker V40 lawsuit allege that Stryker failed to adequately warn patients of the serious complications associated with Stryker Accolade devices, placing company profit over patient safety.
Patients claim to have suffered from a number of serious and sometimes permanent injuries including the following:
- Hip implant failure
- Serious physical pain
- Emotional and mental distress
- Medical and surgical expenses
- Loss of enjoyment of life
In many cases, patients like Stewart who have suffered from serious hip implant complications have been forced to undergo revision surgery to help alleviate these problems, which itself exposes a patient to further risk.
