Blood sample in a test tube VacutainerPharmaceutical giants Bayer HealthCare and Johnson & Johnson are facing a new Xarelto lawsuit, from a man alleging serious internal bleeding injuries.

One of the complications reported in the claim included excessive blood in urine, leading him to seek medical attention for his injuries.

Kentucky plaintiff Michael A. had began using Xarelto on May 19, 2014 to treat his atrial fibrillation.

According to his Xarelto claim, he had used the drug only for its intended purpose and had followed all prescription instructions and physician advice.

He had agreed to take Xarelto after discussing his options with his physician, as the drug was supposed to prevent stroke and other blood clot attacks.

The drug worked well for a little less than a year of treatment, however Michael suffered gross hematuria on April 6, 2015.

Hematuria is described as excessive blood in urine, and is often an indicator of major internal bleeding.

Even though Michael had received emergency medical treatment in time, the injury of excessive blood in urine still remains a constant concern in his mind.

At no point before or after his Xarelto prescription began and ended respectively did Johnson & Johnson or Bayer notify him or his doctors about the risk of Xarelto side effects and dangers thereof.

Michael did not discover the potential Xarelto had for causing internal bleeding injuries, including excessive blood in urine, until less than a year before filing his Xarelto lawsuit.

Overview of Xarelto Bleeding Complications

Xarelto is a second generation anticoagulant, typically prescribed to patients with atrial fibrillation and who are at high risk for stroke.

This medication is popularly used to prevent blood clot attacks, and is one of the top anticoagulants dominating the market. Xarelto was approved by the FDA in 2011, and was released as joint effort between Johnson & Johnson and Bayer HealthCare.

While highly popular amongst patients, Xarelto has been linked to a number of internal bleeding complications that can be potentially fatal if not promptly treated.

Like other anticoagulants, Xarelto works by inhibiting the body’s clotting ability and maximizing the body’s circulation.

Even though it is highly effective against blood clots, patients cannot recover from normally simple internal bleeding events.

Xarelto currently lacks a bleeding antidote in the case of internal bleeding, compared to Warfarin patients who merely implement vitamin K to slow the internal bleed and reenable clotting.

Even though this is important drug safety information, Johnson & Johnson and Bayer HealthCare allegedly chose to omit this data from the drug’s warning label.

Michael’s claim of excessive blood in urine is similar to many other Xarelto lawsuits, leading his own lawsuit to be filed as part of a multidistrict litigation (MDL).

This Xarelto Lawsuit is filed as part of the larger Xarelto MDL known as  In re: Xarelto® (Rivaroxaban) Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2592, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
