A number of service members and veterans who became seriously injured during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan may have been the victims of Iranian-sponsored terrorism. The Department of Defense has determined that a number of IED, EFP and IRAM weapons used in the wars were supplied by Iran. Due to their injuries, thousands of individuals may be eligible to file a terror attack lawsuit.
IEDs, or Improvised Explosive Devices, were widely used in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is estimated that these devices accounted for 63% of coalition deaths in the Iraq war from its beginning through 2007 and have been responsible for 66% of deaths in the Afghanistan war from 2001 up to present date.
According to the New York Times, EFPs, or Explosively Formed Penetrators, were dubbed “the most lethal weapon American forces faced in Iraq.” The EFPs could pierce through armor and were easily camouflaged. Due to these factors, these devices caused a great deal of destruction.
IRAM (or RAM) devices are Improvised Rocket Assisted Munitions and are also known as rocket-propelled bombs. These devices were made from explosive-filled propane tanks powered by rockets. IRAM devices were often launched by remote control from the back of trucks in Iran.
It was determined that although sanctions were placed against Iran for sponsoring terrorist attacks or engaging in terrorist attacks, certain banks worked with the country, sidestepping the sanctions and earning huge profits in return. A number of these banks pleaded guilty to helping Iran fund and distribute weapons and some of these banks have reached settlements with the United States.
Who May be Eligible to File a Terror Attack Lawsuit?
It is estimated that tens of thousands of individuals who have served their country have been harmed by Iranian-sponsored terrorism. In the United States, terror attack victims are allowed to sue conspirators who have enabled the terrorist attacks to happen. These lawsuits may be brought under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The banks who have been accused of sponsoring terrorism in their relationships with Iran while ignoring sanctions include:
- Barclays Plc.
- BNP Paribas S.A.
- Commerzbank A.G.
- Crédit Suisse AG and Crédit Suisse Asset Management Limited
- HSBC Holding Group Plc.
- Standard Chartered Bank Plc.
The U.S. Department of Treasury estimates that at least $150 million was given to fund terrorist groups controlled by Iran.

- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
