Navigating the birth control landscape can be confusing — from the challenge of deciding when it is right to start to selecting a birth control option that balances safety and effectiveness.
Part of this process is also understand what birth control side effects can be expected. One such option, Yasmin/Yaz oral contraceptive pills, have spurred a huge number of individual Yaz lawsuits and class action lawsuits because of such side effects. More women are still filing those Yasmin lawsuits every month.
According to one law firm, court documents cite of a total of 11,677 Yasmin and Yaz lawsuits against Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of the birth control pills, filed in Illinois federal court. In March and April 2014, hundreds of women filed new Yasmin lawsuits against Bayer.
Women who are filing these Yaz lawsuits say they have experienced a number of serious complications and diseases as the result of taking Yasmin or Yaz birth control pills, including allegations of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart attack, strokes, or gallbladder disease. Some of the women’s loved ones have claimed that the women they care about have died as a result of using Yasmin or Yaz birth control pills.
Yaz and Yasmin oral contraceptives were formulated with a new type of synthetic progestin called drospirenone, which is combined with ethinyl estradiol to prevent pregnancy, and were heralded as the “fourth generation combination birth control pills.”
One side effect of drospirenone, the progestin used in Yaz and Yasmin, is the causation of increased blood levels of potassium. According to some scientists and doctors, health risks of these drugs are higher because of those higher levels of potassium, and some European studies point to risks from Yaz and Yasmin double that of second-generation birth control pills, including blood clots in the legs and the lungs, stroke, heart attack, gall bladder disease, and pancreatis. Some women’s loved ones say they have died as a result of Yaz-induced blood clots.

I was 16 in years old in 2006 and on Yaz for a few months to help regulate my period. I was a healthy, active, all-American and state winning swimmer, swam year-round on a club team as well – couldn’t have been in better shape / health. I found out I had a herniated disc in my back and got a minor surgery to remove the herniated and less than a week later had 3 PE’s. Ended up in the ICU for days as they worked to get rid of the clots. Stopped taking the birth control right away.
I took yaz in for over 6 months in 2011 and got pregnant while taking this product, my son was born Feb 2012 and has congenital heart disease due to this product. It does not run in either of our families. My son had heart surgery 2 days after being born and will need multiple in the future. This product shouldn’t even be on the market.
