A woman has filed a talcum powder cancer lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson alleging that she developed ovarian cancer as a result of using the company’s Shower to Shower product.
Plaintiff Rose M. is filing the talcum powder cancer lawsuit in New Jersey federal court. The resident of Louisiana alleges that she had begun using the company’s Shower to Shower product in January 1998, and used it through roughly July 2016.
Moreover, she allegedly was diagnosed with talcum powder cancer in August 2016, in Baton Rouge, La.
Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuit Joins Others in MDL
Rose’s claim is filed as part of a large multidistrict litigation, or MDL. The MDL is centered on the allegations that Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower product and baby powder products cause women to develop ovarian cancer.
According to the talcum powder cancer lawsuit, Johnson & Johnson allegedly hid the serious adverse health effects and the causes in developing ovarian cancer from the consumers and the public and allegedly had initially known of the risks in using talcum products.
According to the talcum powder cancer lawsuit, talc is an inorganic material that is used in a variety of industrial, commercial and cosmetic products. The Johnson & Johnson Shower-to-Shower and Baby Powder are made almost entirely of talc.
Talc is composed of silicon, magnesium and oxygen. And although it is used in a variety of different cosmetic products, including Johnson & Johnson’s products, some studies show it has a connection with serious side effects including ovarian cancer.
Reports indicate that respiratory issues have been linked to the powder becoming inhaled or airborne. Common side effects include, vomiting, throat irritation and low blood pressure, while some serious side effects include, twitching of facial muscles, the inability to urinate and chest pain.
The talcum powder cancer lawsuit accuses the defendant of having known of the existing correlation in the use of the talcum based product and a woman’s development of ovarian cancer. The lawsuit alleges and accuses the defendant of disregarding such evidences and information in an attempt to allegedly increase sales and revenue.
The talcum powder lawsuit contends that women have been led to believe in the product’s safety and efficacy. Unbeknownst to them, they have been completely unaware of the risks associated with the talcum based material in the defendant’s products.
Women have reportedly continued to use the defendant’s products to absorb moisture and help with feminine odors. They have done so for decades without the knowledge that talcum based material could be harmful to them, according to this lawsuit.
However, the talcum powder cancer lawsuit maintains that Rose and many other women have developed ovarian cancer because of the product’s use. They have allegedly developed ovarian cancer as a direct and proximate result of their use of the defendants’ talc-based products.
Rose’s Talcum Powder Cancer Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-05148-FLW-LHG, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The Johnson & Johnson talc powder MDL is In re: Johnson & Johnson Talcum Powder Products Marketing, Sales Practices, and Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 16-2738, in U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
