Talc Cancer Claim Joins MDL
The talc cancer claim is filed as part of a large multidistrict litigation, or MDL, centered on allegations of adverse effects and complications suffered, particularly causing the diagnosis of ovarian cancer in woman from their use of Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-o-Shower products.
According to the talc cancer claim, the allegations purport that Johnson & Johnson failed to disclose its findings that the use of talc may cause ovarian cancer from both its talcum powder products.
The talc cancer claim alleges that the defendant hid these complications and adverse side effects from its consumers and the public, and that they had known of the risks that a talcum based product may cause.
Talc Product Facts
Talc is the main component of Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder product. It is purportedly one of the softest minerals used in the world today. It has also been used in cosmetic products for decades.
Its purpose as the main component of this product is to absorb moisture and reduce friction. And, because of its value in being a soft mineral, it has allowed women to use it for cleanliness and to aid in feminine hygiene.
However, the reports have alleged that the talcum based product use causes women to develop ovarian cancer.
Researchers believe that once talc is used near a women’s genitals, it can travel upwards through to the woman’s ovaries and become embedded in her tissue. Though it is a soft mineral, it is difficult to remove from the body. With an embedded talc particle, inflammation may occur along with cancerous tumors that may also develop.
The Talc Cancer Claim is Case No. 3:17-cv-09134-FLW-LHG in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The Johnson & Johnson talc powder MDL is In re: Johnson & Johnson Talcum Powder Products Marketing, Sales Practices, and Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2738, in U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
