Thousands are filing lawsuits against Janssen Research & Development LLC, the makers of Xarelto. A new claim comes from a woman who is filing a Xarelto medication side effects lawsuit on behalf of her loved one over severe adverse complications she allegedly suffered.

Plaintiff Johnnie L. filed the Xarelto medication side effects lawsuit on behalf of Jacqueline M. on Aug. 1, 2018, demanding a trial by jury. The lawsuit joins a growing multidistrict litigation (MDL).

According to the Xarelto medication side effects lawsuit, Jacqueline, who was a resident of Jefferson County, Ala., began ingesting Xarelto from approximately October 2013 until November 2016. It was on Nov. 18, 2016 when she allegedly suffered internal bleeding side effects as a direct result of taking Xarelto.

The Xarelto medication side effects lawsuit was filed on multiple counts including strict liability, manufacturing defect, design defect, failure to warn, negligence, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, negligent misrepresentation, fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, violation of consumer protection laws/consumer fraud laws, loss of consortium, wrongful death, and survival action.

Overview: Xarelto Medication Side Effects

There are currently over 18,500 Xarelto lawsuits being filed through multidistrict litigation, a specialized handling process through federal courts. An MDL allows similar complaints to be handled by a single district court where an established process oversees how those claims are filed.

Plaintiffs and victims who have suffered from Xarelto medication side effects claim that Xarelto fails to adequately warn about adverse side effects and especially complications stemming from severe internal bleeding. Other allegations against the company include the lack of a proper warning and, until more recently, the absence of an antidote; failure to include results of clinical trials on warning labels; and the need for monitoring while taking the anticoagulant medication.

Victims who have suffered Xarelto medication side effects have suffered severe injuries including internal bleeding complications. However, there are many more complications that have been reported with Xarelto, such as:

  • Retinal hemorrhages
  • Abdominal hemorrhages
  • Intracranial hemorrhages
  • Adrenal bleeding
  • Excessive blood loss
  • Epidural hematoma
  • Stroke
  • Wound infection and complication
  • Death

Xarelto first became approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011. It is prescribed as a blood thinner to help prevent and treat conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and blood clots.

However, while Xarelto was first praised for this ability to quickly act against blood clots, plaintiffs claim the medication’s lack of an antidote put patients in grave risk; thus, allowing patients to suffer internal bleeding side effects.

Many patients were also completely unaware that Xarelto did not have an antidote available, unlike other anticoagulant medications such as warfarin which offers reversal for internal bleeding side effects through the administration of vitamin K. An antidote for Xarelto was finally made available in May 2018.

Patients and victims who have suffered Xarelto medication side effects may be eligible to file a Xarelto lawsuit if they suffered a bleeding event, stroke, or another severe injury after taking Xarelto. For those who are filing Xarelto lawsuits on behalf of loved ones who have passed away, surviving family members may also file a wrongful death claim and pursue damages and recoveries.

The Xarelto Medication Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-07256-EEF-MBN, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The Xarelto MDL is in re: Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2592, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
