A Maryland woman recently filed an Unum disability insurance lawsuit against the insurance giant, alleging she was improperly denied her rightful disability claim.
The plaintiff, Pamela M., worked for the Maryland company Alere, through which she was covered under a group benefits plan from Unum Life Insurance Company of America.
During her work for Alere as a Support Consultant, Pamela unfortunately became disabled. According to the Unum disability insurance lawsuit, Pamela suffers from degenerative disc disorders in her back and neck, which leads to chronic pain, fatigue, cognitive impairment, and other problems that prevent her from performing the full capacity of her work.
Unfortunately, when Pamela filed her long-term disability claim, she was denied, despite her very real disability. Though her claim was denied, she still had paths forward open to her. First, Pamela filed an appeal to Unum to reverse its claim denial, including medical evidence and other proof of her disability and qualification for long-term disability benefits. However, Unum denied Pamela’s appeal as well. Pamela updated her appeal in January 2018, but Unum continued to deny her claim.
At this point, Pamela had exhausted all her administrative means of fighting Unum’s denial decision. Instead, she turned to litigation, filing an Unum disability insurance lawsuit alleging her long-term disability claim was wrongfully denied despite sufficient evidence.
Unum Benefits Claim Denial
Pamela is not the first person to have been denied the rightful benefits she was supposed to receive under Unum policy. Some disabled consumers seek reinstatement of their disability benefits by pursuing more administrative means available to them, including filing appeals to reverse Unum’s decision.
However, even when a person attempts to appeal, Unum may still deny this appeal. After the appeals approach proves unsuccessful, some turn to legislative means to seek the company’s claim denial reversal going forward.
A growing number of plaintiffs like Pamela have begun filing an Unum disability insurance lawsuit against the insurance giant. Lawsuits allege that the company unfairly denied their Unum benefits claim that they qualify for under the terms of their insurance policies provided by their employer.
This Unum disability insurance lawsuit and others like it allege that Unum has unfairly denied the disability insurance claims of plaintiffs who are qualified to receive such benefits. Some lawsuits go further, alleging that the company purposely denied the claims of hundreds of thousands of workers with legitimate disabilities for no reason other to increase company profit.
