In the VW diesel admissions scandal that erupted in 2015, also referred to as “dieselgate,” it was noted that Volkswagen engaged in a conspiracy to conceal that the manufacturer had installed a “cheat device” that ultimately allowed for the underreporting of VW diesel emissions.
The VW diesel emissions were found to violate the Clean Air Act, though the software that was installed in the vehicles reported that the emissions were within acceptable levels on testing. This device allowed the engines to run differently during testing and falsely lowered the diesel emissions under testing conditions as opposed to on-road conditions.
After the scandal broke, VW suffered a huge hit after consumer confidence in the brand plummeted. In 2014, 10.4 million vehicles were sold worldwide for a total of $221 billion in revenue, with 215 million in revenue being earned the year before.
When details of the scandal were released in 2015, VW stopped the sales of its diesel vehicles and there was a significant decrease in the sales of all other vehicles as well. According to Bloomberg, a July 2016 report stated that sales in the U.S. of VW vehicles fell 22% and represented an eight month decline in sales.
Volkswagen Salesman Salary Decreases Follow
With all of the information focused on the integrity of the Volkswagen brand, the pollution of diesel engines from VW diesel emissions and decrease in sales for the automaker, much of the conversation completely left out an important group of individuals who were affected by VW’s actions.
Volkswagen salesman salary decreases soon followed the release of information in the VW diesel emissions scandal. As most salespeople are paid almost entirely on commission, huge drop in sales greatly affected these individuals and their families. Many hard-working men and women were dealt a huge financial blow as a result of the actions of the automobile maker.
